BBC 3CR Broadcast ideas please

Recommended Posts

Of course I have to do what I'm told, I can't just talk rubbish for hours, but if I get the opportunity during my forthcoming Radio Broadcast to divulge some wise numismatic words, what shall I say to the people of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the surounding areas?

- The truth about the New Pence 2p rumour

- The truth about the £2 Queen with necklace rumour

- The fact that most coins are worthless, and any from the last 100+ years should ideally be in super condition to be really collectable.

Please add more ideas for me below!

Thanks,

actually those silver pennies/twopences are not from where it has worn off. You can quite easily remove the copper plating chemically ;) Same goes for the 'copper' euro coins.... I've done it here, but would not consider selling them as special.

I think Wybrit's idea are probably too advanced for your average member of the public listener, but certainly food for thought.

When are you on Radio 3?

And for how long?

Will they play coin related music during your session?

Well we've discussed coin related music before somewhere in here, perhaps Pink Floyd's Money, The Beatles, Abba etc. The sex pistols God save the Queen would be appropriate!

And it's BBC 3 Counties, which is broadcast to the areas mentioned above and can be picked up as far as London in the south, East Angia in the East, Swindon in the West and Lincolnshire in the North.

I'll be on 3.30 - 4.00pm Friday February the 27th, and then monthly depending how it goes for all involved.

And then onto TV specials?

I can see it now, Coin Times, hosted by Chris Perkins :D

You're damn right mystery guest!

Maybe I'll do a Bargain Hunt kind of programme, just for teams to buy coins, in the same format as the David Dickinson version. With an auction at the end! ;)

Well you never know do you, but perhaps it's too much of a minority thing, unfortunately.

I just don't think many women are into that kind of thing. I do have female customers, I don't think it's quite the odds you mention but it is certainly male dominated.

In fact when I think about the women I know, none of them collect anything, and none of them even have a hobby as such.

I take it you are female then, mystery guest?

Actually i don't want to get flamed by the female members here for stating this...

But i know a few women that do so much clothes shopping you could say they collect both clothes and shoes!!! (One had over 200 pairs of shoes on the last count!)

Any of them particularly rare? Maybe some of them have heels struck on top of other heels, and I'm sure she has many different patterns in her collection.

Well back to the subject, I can't be a sexist pig on the BBC can I ;)

Chris, is there anywhere I can get a net broadcast of this programme online?

Ok, a few ideas:

Maybe mention how people can protect commemorative coins they've bought recently. Let's face it, the Sunday mags are forever trying to flog limited strikes of some coin or other these days: Death of Diana, Golden Jubilee, Queen taking corgi for a poo, 200 years of fish and chips etc.

On Saturday I was talking to a coin dealer on the market who had practically been accosted by an irate seller trying to get rid of scratched and chipped 1981 Royal Wedding coin. "But I've had it nearly 25 years, it must be worth something !"

Ok, only worth a couple of quid in mint condition anyway but it brings home the fact that coins need to remain protected as thet get passed down. Bags out - hard plastic in :)

Similarly, a mention about the plethora of the aforementioned commemorative coins, and why the general public should't be duped into buying coins which will not appreciate in value for a century or more. Buying older mint or unc coins is the most prudent way to gain a heirloom (a plug for yourself as Europe's foremost supplier of such things might be a shrewd move at this point  )

...as long as you don't dress like him!

Seriously, for your broadcast you could do something as simple as introduce listeners to the pre-decimal system, as I'm sure many under-40s will be hazy about it.

... and you could mention that in those days you could build a collection from change in your pocket spanning 100 years and five monarchs, but now all you can get are 30 year old coppers.

Or, you could look forward to the Euro and say how we would be able to pick out coins from other countries in our change. After all, we haven't changed our currency for 30 years...

I have removed a whole bagful of 1971 stuff from circulation as part of my experiment into how common the Machin head copper stuff is. 1971 is at the top, 1982 is the least encountered. (unless you count 1972 proofs with 0 examples raked out of change)

Syl.
