I have been collecting pennies for quite a while and people often give me any they find .But i have been given this by my sister who found it in her aunts house.I ahve looked everywhere on the net to find out what it is and had no look.Ever William and Mary coin i look at does not have the same sheild on it.Or the 40s on reverse.I presume this means 40 shillings.Can anyone help ....Thankyou

You're quite correct. The 40 does mean 40 (Scottish) shillings - ie 3/4d (that's three shillings and fourpence not threefarthings!) English or around half a crown. The shield is different in bearing the Scottish lion in two quarters and in the centre the Dutch. You will find the edge will have signs of lettering - either QVARTO, QUINTO or SIXTO.

Are there signs of mounts on the edge of is that just a trick of the light? Either way I'd say thanks very much to your sister. In Fine condition like this - a bit over £100..

Thanks for the info really interesting doesn't look like its been mounted a little nick just over the 3 though.I cant read around the edge as it is quite thin....think i need glasses !!!!

Did you notice that William and Mary face in the opposite direction to what they do on English coins. I know this is also true on Charles II, but don't know about other monarchs.
