Kruggerands, the new sovereign

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I`ve heard a rumour that Air Crews, are now issued with Kruggerands, as apposed gold sovereigns. I`ve yet to have this confirmed, and if true I`m assuming that its the quarter ounce ones, and not a full kruggerand. Will try and confirm more details and let you know.

Can anyone shine any light on this further?

I haven't heard this story before.I can tell you that the Krugerrand has the same fineness of gold in it as the Sovereign & the Britannia (the British series which is derived from the Krugerrand).I've always had a soft spot for the Krugerrand,as it is one of the most attractive coins that South Africa has ever issued. In fact,it is one of the most attractive designs,as Coert Steynburg's pronking Springbok design was first used on the South African 1947 Royal Visit 5/- (Crown).I have the 1/10 Krugerrands dated 1984 & 1990 in my collection,as South Africa is a British Commonwealth country.

Aidan.

I have a couple of 1978 Krugerrands that I have owned since I was a kid, only recently in the past few months in fact, are they worth more than I paid for them.
