What is my 13mm brown Vic 1887 coin?

Guest Maggie

Please can anyone tell me what the tiny coin I have is?

It is 13mm diameter, is copper/bronze i guess.

It has Queen Victoria on the front with the letters IM:OF 5 SOVGN:L:CHR:LAUER

and the sovereign horse and rider on the back with 1887 at the bottom

Any help would be most gratefully accepted!

Thank you

Maggie

It is one of a number of types of model coinage produced in the Victorian era. Toy money you might say. Someone should have a piece which they can upload as an image. Made by Lauer of Nurnberg.

Thank you so much for replying so quickly. I've never heard of this, was it made for kids? Much as our plastic toy money is today?

Yeah, they were made for children to play with, I have a 0.9 millimetre lead peice with similar legends and the reverse of a Victorian shilling.

They are all pretty common, and Krause states they are of little commerical value

Maggie,

If you do a search on lauer on ebay or in google, you should get plenty of images to compare with.
