Cartwheel Twopence

Recommended Posts

Guest Leilatara

I have a George III Cartwheel Twopence in VF condition. It has the letters SOHO beneath and just to the right of Britannia's Shield on the reverse. Can someone tell me more about this please?

That's because it was struck in the Soho district of Birmingham (not London, like a lot of people think) by the bran new technology at Mathew Boultons steam coin press.

It revolutioned the way coins were struck and was in use (as far as I know) right into Victorian times, when electricity took over.

A fact about Soho in London, it was intended for the aristocracy to live in after the Great Fire of London. Then after they moved out it turned into the seedy place it is today. Quite a transition, don't you think?

I read it in a booklet I got whilst queueing for the London Eye

Thanks for that, but why do some Cartwheel Twopences have the word SOHO and some don't? Is there any difference in value?

Sorry, i don't know, but according to Spink 2003 your Cartwheel twopence in VF should be worth £100. In Coin Yearbook 2004, it values it £40 in VF! That difference simply defies belief! :o

Spink's 2004 values the Cartwheel Twopence at £125 in VF

They should all have 'SOHO' on them I believe. The only possible cause of a lack of SOHO would be because it has been worn away through use.

Yes, i was looking through Spinks and couldn't find a cartwheel twopence without the word SOHO on it!

Oli,

Why did you edit your original post? Just curious!

Because it didn't make sense when linked with the quote
