1802 George III coin

Recommended Posts

Somebody posted this coin on onother form. Is it a fake or a pattern? 1802 cartwheel penny otr two pence?

The person more interested in the inscription but is 1802 not an impossible date for such a coin and they are normaly dated on the reverse. So anybody any thoughts? maybe the date has been etched on?

The '1802' has been added by the person that engraved the advert name around the king's head. It's a normal 1797 coin in awful condition, engraved in 1802!

(and from the bust type, it's a penny)

Cheers Chris,

Kind of what I susspected, so that was probably the date he made the inscription. Thanks for the conformation there were chartwheel patters made but they were for 1/4d etc and non made in 1802 am I correct?

Yes, I think there are some 1798 pattern coins and earlier dates too, plus all kinds of later proof after strikes in various metals. I think the 1797 coins were still being struck in 1802, but always with the 1797 date. I'd have to check Peck.

They even went to the lengths of replaces the actual date with what look like flowers! Interesting.
