I've found a box of very old coins...

We've just moved house and I've found a box of very old coins that my grandfather left me. Seems to be a mixture of English, French, Irish and some which even look Roman.

Some go back to 1600s, French ones from 1789 and all sorts. Some with George III and Queen Victoria on. Rather intriguing.

I know nothing at all about coins and was wondering how much they're worth. Can anyone help an ignoramous?

Cheers

Hi Oliver welcome to the forum,

Factors that determine the price of coins are condition, rarity and I suppose to some extent what they are made from. Age doesn’t always mean value; you can pick up roman coins for a couple of pounds where as a 1933 penny will set you back a couple of thousand pounds.

We would have to see pictures of the coins to give you an estimate of value, and even then it is not as accurate as seeing a coin in hand. You could scan or take a photo of each coin front (obverse) and back (reverse). Then post them for people to see and to get some more info on them.

There are many knowledgable collectors that frequent this forum with allot of great advice.
