Ebay's Worst Offerings

This surprises me. I've got some electrotype/counterfeit coins on ebay at the moment (after giving SEUK first refusal) and my electrotype Scottish 1582 40s in copper has gone a bit high (£235 just now, with about 6 hours to go). I've noted that I've incorrectly called it a 60s, but can't change it!

I know that older electrotypes are collectable and I know what I paid for it about 10 years ago. £235 is more than I thought it would get to!

It looks like shilling, I know!

But I honestly have no idea who those bidders are. One of the bidders whacked on the £230 on the 29th June (my Birthday, as you all know) and the other has been coming back to it and nudging a few times a day in small increments. Yesterday he stopped around £100. Today he nudged until he finally out bid the £230 just now.

Edit: initial bidder bid the £230 on the 30th!

I don't understand why people don't just bid what they are willing to pay. If the underbidder stops a hundred quid below where you would go, then it doesn't cost you your max.

It went for £235 in the end, which is a very nice surprise. The others also did well and there are 3 more that end at the weekend.

I'm currently doing pics and cataloguing my 50+ 1770s fake halfpennies in the hope that there may be a scarce US made one among them.

Bit of a shame really, considering the auctions are raising money for charity.

He's got an interesting range of items for sale. They seem to be either fossils/minerals, ancient roman objects, coins or mens leather play wear, for want of a better term.

Misattributed by CGS so arguably not the seller's 'fault' but still. This came out of Lockdale's in March for £80 hammer, really wouldn't have bothered having it slabbed as £200 is silly. And 'finest known' is surely redundant as the vast majority of these aren't being entombed by the tpgs.

He's taken it down ... who is it then Damian, it appears to say 'Maximinus' in the lettering? Looks like S 531A to me, it's even pictured (in Spink 2013) so one of the easiest to attribute I would have thought? And Salus is seated!

Yeah he said he would until he could reattribute. Can't argue with the seller's response. I blame a lack of sleep and too much caffeine. See I'll pay more than whatever would be a commonly accepted value for a coin if it appeals to me, but the idea that a coin that came out of auction only a couple of months ago is now worth double by virtue of the magic shrine that is the slab just gets me ticking a bit. Some coins you could probably list at double the cost price and get a buyer no problem but this is a common one that was bought at the upper estimate.

Yes Maximinus I. There are a few coins struck in the name of Maximus who was his son.

It's not 531A as that is a sestertius rather than a denarius but it's the same design.

Same attribution on the CGS label (of course), but at least he has changed the description to Maximinus

Yes, it looks like it's Maximinus, especially judging from the portrait. He's corrected the CGS error in his description.

Why would anyone bother to send it off for someone to read the legend for them? The ten or twenty quid would be better spent buying a reading for dummies book. Double that and you could have the reference book for posterity.

I suppose he meant he doesn't speak as an authority on the matter and would rather let the slab do the talking but it boils down to being able to ask a bit extra for the coin.

On slabbing in general I'm currrently looking at an MS64 "WINGS APPROVED" coin. Tempted, but expect it will go too high. Anyway the WINGS guys have a slogan:

"All equally graded world coins are not equal".

It's a large catalogue of silly behaviour, all of which are used to present a business case. One has it slabbed to try to up the price people would pay. Said slabbing has got the description fundamentally wrong. Another says you need an opinion of an opinion to make sure that opinion is justified.

In fact this whole thread is a litany of silly behaviour. We've just moved from a purveyor of rubber entertainment clothing to opinions dressed in plastic. Too many fetishes here.
