His explaination

Under magnification it shows hand mm. Charles 1 did not have this mm. Charles 1 also re purposed other rulers coinage during desperate times. Information on Charles 1 re purposing past rulers coinage is limited. I'm not an expert on English coin oddities such as this one. The information I've provided is what I discovered through my own research. All input is welcome as these pieces are not well documented, and I'm always interested in learning.

What a 24 carat...how can research uncover such a nonsense that has Charles over Elizabeth!

Interesting colour, given that the skin colour is normalish?

According to the pic in Spink, The E1 (yes Elizabeth Stu!) 'hand' mm is a left-pointing hand with 4 fingers and a thumb - wonder if this one is a tooled tun? Looks like a tun on the reverse ...

:D yes, thank-you, Paul!

Not tooled, just a blocked tun I'd say!

Any thoughts on the colour?

What do you mean by "Interesting colour, given that the skin colour is normalish?" ?

Colour of the coin?

Edit: sorry, to expand...I mean that the colur and tones of the picture look about right, on account of the skin colour! So I'm thinking the coin must be more or less the colour shown in the images?

Perhaps merely his hue/saturation/white balance settings coupled with the lighting conditions?

From the hand mark of ER I to the TUN. Mark is around 46 years and a king inbetween, so in theory why would'nt James I use it if the spot priceof silver was higher during his reign? The man is just looking for a stooge

He does say any questions welcome.

High on the list would be why he doesn't submit himself to one of the TPGs and get himself certified...............

Stuart, you're right. The colour values in the rest of the photo look to be pretty accurate. The coin could well be brown!

I also agree it looks like a tun mm. Clear on the reverse, but on the obverse possibly been fiddled about with.

If an earlier coin had been over struck, why would it be done in such a way? Both obverse and reverse designs and legends completely replaced, but just the tiny area where the mm appears left unchanged?

Nah…..

The seller also states 'troubled times' as a rationale for the 'over strike'? It's my memory that the tun predates the civil war by some years!

Uh, halve that number or less. Crown closed on 14/2/1636. Tun was operative from then until it was pyxed on 8/5/1638. Charles raised his standard at Nottingham on 22nd August 1642 - the date which is usually accepted as the outbreak of war.

I've just noticed that the date given in Brooker (SCBI33) for the pyx trial is not stated as being OS or NS. Based on the mintages for gold and silver, Bell lasted 1 year, and roughly 90% more in both metals was struck during Crown, so I assume it was OS and therefore a 20 month striking period. For the duration of Tun, gold was struck at approximately the same rate as previously (approx. £100 or so in the pyx), but the quantity of silver ballooned to 2.5x the rate seen for the two previous marks - this presuambly a reflection of Thomas Bushell's mines near Aberystwyth coming into production and the subsequent coining at Aberystwyth in addition to the Tower.

Well, after a small arguement with the seller and me sending him my picture of my i.m tun shilling he's seen sense and taken it down, mine has the tun mark fully struck and shows the edges which are a little serated on the edge of the mark which i assume he thought were the fingers of the hamd i.m of ER I No apologies though

There are a few nice EFs up for grabs

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coin-Victorian-Penny-Young-Head-EF-1855-/381048592159

Most of the grading seems to be by consensus rather than by any analysis of the coin's wear which is why the EFs end up as UNCs and the VFs as EFs. But I can't grade for toffee so... I propose a new two-tier grading system.

I was just reading some of his feedback though and I feel sorry for him actually, assuming his responses are honest as it would appear that other sellers are trying to discredit him on false grounds.

No, buy it Paulus. Why is this in here rather than the my wife has bled me dry thread?

Oi, you! ;)

No only joking keep that thread for the nice stuff that crops up. I think bringing wives into it is a bit unfair, despite furs being mentioned. It's the Dr. Jekyll thread. This one is the Edward Hyde.

To be fair, I've bought a number of coins from Lucido, and it's always been straightforward. I just found this particular coin amusing, as he's not generally as bad as this?

I'm going to check out his feedback, as I don't recall looking before.
