Ebay's Worst Offerings

This aside what's the problem with the coin jac?

This particular seller's grading is usually way too high. You need to replace the word "virtually" with "nowhere near" and it will seem more accurate. Just have a look at the "choice high grade" 1905 florin that he is selling. He grades it as about EF, whereas it is much more like VF.

If that ...

K***2 with a 224 feedback won it Plus he never got anywhere near the 2k what he was obviously angling for as he usually does in his "suggested" price text

With eBay, just subtract a grade and Bob's your uncle.

The penny was overgraded 'virtually UNC' I know. Who spends 2 grand on a coin based on the assigned rather than actual grade though? I bought a lot of coins based purely on the assigned grade rather than the coin itself 12 months ago but it mattered less then as I spent less. It makes me wonder though if this is one of the motivators for grading as UNC - if it says it's UNC well it must be.

I'd rather always buy from independent dealers if they have what I want. I probably only buy from a handful and it's mainly about trust. If I've ever gone with a cheaper option I've usually been disappointed. With eBay the mentality is different. Buy in what's available, notch it up a grade or two and then add a bit on to cover best offers. Really the whole ecosystem is f@cked.

The ones who get a lot of repeat custom on eBay must have customers who don't go anywhere else. The same way that MacKenzie Crook, for some insane reason, only seems to buy from Coincraft.

Yeah it's a lovely 1905 florin that.

I never could figure out how to do a quote, anyway re: #5628 the repeat custom bit.

What a load of blox, don't tar everyone with the same brush. If you don't like ebay then don't bleeding use it, whining about how everyone who sells on ebay is wrong or broken is fcking annoying to those of us who sell on ebay that are generally liked and appreciated by nearly everyone apart from some on this forum.

I believe Damian also sells on ebay, some on this forum know who the arseholes of ebay are and usually are referenced somehow, if we or the some that you are quoting have picked up on something you've sold then let us know otherwise we're not talking about you and should stop being paranoid. We pick up the general f**ktards on ebay who seem to think a washer is rare or a Fine graded coin is UNC etc etc etc or those who shill bid everytime they list something.

Fair point, no no-ones ever mentioned anything I sold or listed and on reflection my comment was a bit grumpy. There still are a few of us that can reliably grade and sell at fair prices though so a generalised sweeping statement can be a bit annoying, perhaps we could add the caveat "except for Flash"

Except for Flash.

I am being unduly harsh I know.

I sell some on there so I can see the other side of the coin. I'm sure you could pick holes in those listings. On price or grade or whatever. It's more just my own grumpiness coming to the fore in this case - it's not an especially great place to be hunting down coins right now is all. That's how I feel.

I wouldn't make sweeping generalisations if I didn't think that the members here could handle them.

There are tonnes of dealers on eBay that I buy from and respect.

I emailed the guy and he admitted it was a replica, so lowered the price from £90...to £30.

If we could all email him, that'd be great - as some naive sod has bid: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/jbro80005/m.html?item=181637523237&hash=item2a4a70a725&pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

Done.

As well as drawing his attention to WRL being clearly stamped in the reverse field I've also told him its not silver.

At least the buyer will be able to return under the 'not as described' option if he/she realises the mistake once the 'coin' is received.

I've received this reply from the seller, but I see the listing remains unchanged.

Hi Jbro,

The Henry VIII groat you have listed is a modern pewter (not silver) replica made by WRL. If you look at the reverse you will see their stamp to the left of the shield. These replicas are sold on presentation cards and are available on line and in museum gift shops for a couple of pounds each.

Kind regards,

Mchael

He added WRL to the description now. Not the words "replica" though.

Didn't realise but you can see the feedback they give to others. He leaves negatives prior to contacting the seller to sort out the problem if he's not happy. Would pretty much always seek resolution and leave a positive if handled properly.

Oops, really? I didn't look beyond the image!

You're still looking for one of them, aren't you, Paulus? ;)

A real one, yes! In fact I would be very happy to free up some funds by selling a few coins to obtain a nice example, especially of S2590, 2595 or 2596 ;)

I think that's a tad unfair to make the description so small, as it is in normal sized font.

He's also honest going by the description, just a little deluded with his concept of worth.

I think it's a bit of a scam. The postage is £13.25 so if anyone even bids £1 then he's doing alright. Suppose the only way to know for sure is to put a ridiculously low bid in but for £13.25 I'd want it hand-delivered, wrapped in silk ribbon and a kiss on the cheek.

That's probably his paypoo fees on £200 included with the postage.

I see it now stands at £40.99 with five bids and three hours to go!

I simply don't get it. Even if bidders haven't scrolled down to the bottom of the page where he's added 'WRL' the stamp is clearly obvious in the reverse photos.

Sigh. This is a re-listing 261732478837 of a coin someone bid up to £1000 a little while ago.

"Your item is a replica. Hence I suspect why someone bid it up last time. To ensure some unsuspecting innocent didn't waste their money.

The weight will confirm or not ..."

"How would you know it's a replica?"

"Will you justify your statement "

"I have one just like it I bought a few years ago at a museum. Some are stamped WRL, some are not.

But they are all the same shape and the design is 'softer' than the real thing as they were cast. However the weight is the key thing as the replicas are made of lead-free pewter rather than silver. If you have scales you can check.

I just mention it to save you from the risk of someone wanting to return it as 'not as described'."

And the answer ...

""This one wasn't bought though & it as no WRL stamp on it"

Hmm ..
