Has the world gone mad

Oh my

If it was genuinely uncirculated I'd say that was not far off a fair price. IMO 1921 is by far the rarest shilling in that series in Unc - yes, rarer than 1925. But I assume you're pointing us at the scratch on the neck, and what looks like wear to the hair detail?

And as a 5+E the most numerous of the 1921 series. I'd have put it at sub £100 and would have been desperate to go more than £60.

I agree it's the commonest of the varieties, but what I was getting at is that NO 1921 shilling is common in Unc. Even in Spink - not the most enthusiastic listers of modern silver varieties - it's over £100. I'm not sure what that ebay dollar price translates to exactly?

Hmm, mine is better than that, and I got it for £31 last year.

Incidentally, the example Gary linked to would have been about £151 at current exchange rates.

I think the difficulties in obtaining a true UNC example of any of the varieties of the 1921 shilling, are already well documented on here. I got lucky.

Didn't I read on here that Spink have the 1921 shillings mixed up making this the cheaper of the two types listed

£151 is a bit on the high side I agree, but not ludicrously so. £31 for yours? If truly BU you got the bargain of the year!

Yes, it was my research that got it listed by Spink in the first place. We've already agreed this is the commonest variety, but as I said above, no 1921 shilling is common in BU, in fact I'd rate it the scarcest (in UNc) of that series.

Yep, what happened was that there was a very low response on the night, and my £31 was bid more in hope than expectation. Incredibly, however, I was the winner. But the coin had failed to reach the reserve price. I asked the seller to let me know what the reserve price was, as I might be willing to meet it. In the event she let me have it it for the £31 ~ thanks, therefore, to Julie Sutton.

The coin truly is BU, with no signs of wear, and all the hair detail ~ such as it is in that series ~ intact.

The only blemish is a very light brown stain on the obverse, and ever so slightly between the legends in places. But still a gem of an example.

Darn, will have to ask the seller for a new picture. I think this is the chance I have been waiting for, and a starting bid of only 5k is the bargain!

No bids -- so far...

Out-of-focus penny

Even out of focus you can easily tell it's a fake.

Damn, the profit on these has gone up a bit lately. You could get these (and other rare dates) from a guy in Essex for £14.99 each a little while ago. Quite good they were as well. Now they're £5k - not a bad profit margin on that price, provided you can find a mug to buy it!!

It's not a fake, it's a replica! Look at the distance of the design from the rim. No wonder he unfocused the camera

The seller describes this disc as XF-AU

I can't be bothered to 'improve' it with photoshop, but it does look quite nasty and almost looks like it's been cast. Strange...

There was a set issued by the Royal Mint when the bi metal £2 first came about, showing stages of the minting process, the final coin has 'Trial' on it, they were originally made to test vending machines, probably a set been broken apart to be sold, the set usually sells at around £20/30, where as the blanks fetch more as an 'error'

Quite right. I've got a set and it has a sailing ship on the reverse and the queen's head on the obverse. It was dated 1994 and showed four stages of the production process for the £2 coin.

You do get 4 pieces in there, so it isn't as bad as might first appear.

Does anyone know how many were made and who the designer was?
