Ebay's Worst Offerings

Recommended Posts

My eldest has got my "get rid of" box and sold 15 last week and the same again tonight.Looks like we will hit £200+.

I've got enough to last until Xmas. :) I've got a selling and buying ID and never dismiss Ebay as its a 24/7/365 market.

She was doing a Sunday morning paperound...this is much easier.

With Declans help it will make buying far less of a task...hope he doesn't blacklist me  I'll have to list a few Cupro Uncs ;)

I too have a load of crap duplicates that i've accumulated over the years, but have always been nervous about selling on Ebay, Is it better to list everything indvividually or make them into small lots that fit into standard postage rates?

maybe a job for winter, when I can't get into the garden

:)

David

Basically I start everything at 99p.

Get kitted out with small jiffies (normal stamps)little plastic envelopes and a standard photocopied note.

I don't want 99p so don't bother listing a fine 1901 1d or a 1948 2/6 in VF.

Silver sells well(apart from 3d's).

My daughter does everything apart from a brief description although she is getting there.

Getting paid and posting is always a hassle so 15 items per week is my tolerance level.

Its also good fun.

What narks me is someone gets £9 for a 1928 F florin described as EF when mine gets £2.46 when its VF....well thats Ebay.

All sent, Gents.

I'm sure if their stuff isn't good enough for me, it won't be good enough for you 3 either...

In addition to ignoring certain sellers, I put this in the search bar at the top too, so even more junk (& gold!) gets eliminated

-1967 -197* -198* -199* -200* -201* -olympic -holed -counterfeit -enamelled -framed -token -damaged -"two pounds" -gibraltar -decimal -proof -pattern -mother -wedding -churchill -£5 -£2 -diana -sovereign -"Isle of Man" -gold -keyring -alderney -jersey -guernsey -20p -50p -commemorative -cufflinks

Looks like I must have been eliminated in the past. :D

Seriously though, you can see why people list junk - if it is going to sell anywhere, it is on ebay. Before I stopped selling on ebay a few years ago I listed a fairly low grade 1882/1H 1d, say no better than nVF. It made nearly £60 despite being described as such. An 1846 1d, good fine at best, made £66 despite my feeling embarassed to even consider listing it. Flat discs that sell for £1 - WHY?? A pair of QEII crowns sold. They may have been mint state, but when you sell these you think the good times will never end and it gives an incentive to try even harder.

Yes, like gold, I filter out the stuff that's out of my league too...

Personally I think it's fantastic that people can sell any old junk. The other side of the coin is that people can start collecting at any lowly level. We all started somewhere, and it's purely down to ebay that my own collection has advanced in leaps and bounds. Only 5 years ago or so, the stuff I'm buying now would have been dream coins.

get 'em listed, David! One at a time, 99p starts. If you think it's not good enough, think again.

I've sold 26 1967 pennies in the last 5 years! Including postage, that's £40, or a decent Double Florin - that's the way I think about the junk that does sell - all you're doing is converting it to nicer coins. Imagine walking into a dealers shop and offering him 26 1967 pennies for that near EF Roman I 4/- he has for sale...!

If you guys don't mind selling it to American sellers, a -lot- of old coppers go for $$$$ if you say that they were of the type used in the US colonies. America has such an age premium for coins in the 17XX and the 18XX, well beyond the value of the coins.

I emailed the seller asking why it had been relisted, he sent me an eBay generated email stating that our other friend surrey*Coins had bought the item and wanted to return it.

It would obviously Stick out like a sore thumb inbetween the shite He sells so thought better to send it back lol

They all look Brasso'd to me. And Brittannia's face looks ... really odd, IMHO. But, hey .. what do I know. :)

There is something dodgy about this seller.I wonder how he obtained these coins?

According to the description it weigh's (sic) 1.5g and is 15mm from end to end. I call that a rivet. The statistics suggest a 1/3 farthing, but if genuinely 15mm from end to end, then the rivet is approximately 200mm diameter at the ends and Peter has a point. Ho ho ho - pink giant.

I think those particular farthings are being sold by a member of these forums Tom. I actually thought it looked quite reasonable, if a little pale.

Its not so much of a laugh but....

If any of you are tempted by the 45x magnifier with LED lights for £14.50 (delivered) which is currently being pushed on ebay (The seller has 30+ positive feedbacks already this month).

You can get the same item for £1.37 (delivered)from China or HK.There is also a UK seller £4.62 (delivered).

I bought one from China and it does the job.

I won't give you links but just put x 45 magnifier into your Ebay search.

Now I know how Poundland do it. :) We spent £15 on bits for my daughters forthcoming party which would of cost over £100 in Sainsburys.

Yes - didn't you see the thread from our friend who has bought a lot of UNC 1825 farthings? It COULD just be a coincidence of course...

The other coins he is selling point to a non collector

who has "aquired" a few half decent coins and buffed a few and tried to ID a few.

No way either of the 2 members here with a few 1825 1/4d's.
