Here's a weird one, joining an aluminium 5 franc to a bronze penny would be tricky, doesn't look like the nickel issue

eBay is incredible - you'd struggle to get £120 for a 1927 proof florin in FDC, and here is one worn to buggery going for £80.

Nick, i dunno where you've been hiding my friend, but 27 florin proofs are topping the 200 quid mark, regardless what Spink says, so if you find any at less than 120, gimme a shout

I paid 140 for 1 2 years ago that did'nt turn up and was gutted, but got a nice One now. Maybe also checck out the 27 threepence proofs, also way over spinks valuations, just My tip ;)

Uh? So what's that doing for the value of a 1927 proof set? Over £500 now?

In that case, my 1927 proof florin (aFDC) was a bargain. I bought it last year for under £110.

I have noticed that the Spink prices for the 1927 proof coins are bizarre: £375 for the crown, £90 for the halfcrown, £120 for the florin, £60 for the shilling, £45 for the sixpence and £120 for the threepence. Why would the florin be worth more than the halfcrown, and why would the threepence be nearly three times the value of the sixpence?

Spink quote £650 in FDC.

AFDC is not quite proof Nick. FDC would be proof. 27 Proof sets are around 1100 Quid in the cases Peck, take a look on ebay just now and you'll see a few there. We need to get our mindset off what Spink says and take a look at what auctions are selling for.

Spink also says that the 2 Pence cartwheel is worth 200 quid in VF, would you pay that for a VF cartwheel?

Its all to do with demand i suppose, i watched a Thrrepence about 4 weeks ag on on ebay, the acorns were worn but it was proof issue, it went for 124 quid. I would hate to think what a real proof without wear would do, perhaps 150:

In fact go onto ebay look for aspencoins, he's in the USA and a Threepence Proof is finishing tonight, watch and see what it goes for.

I also bought about 2 weeks ago a Proof 1911 Halfcrown for $167, a week later another was up for sale, it went for $285, so someone was pissed off lol

Here's a good one. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1c22c7be18

Targeting the micro-market I'd say! Just hope someone gets me one, one day!

Unfortunately i don't know anyone who's 110 this year or i would have snapped his hand off for it

Or you could get this one for an extra 35 quid

Proof is a method of striking not a measure of quality.

Here are the pictures for you to decide on the condition.

I know that the prices are based on supply and demand. It still seems odd to me because there were originally equal numbers of each denomination, so supply is equally limited and are there really 3 times as many threepence collectors as there are sixpence collectors?

The threepence has always been one of the highest rated 1927 proofs - the reasons for that maybe lost in the mists of time. However, it MAY be to do with the fact that it and the florin are the only issues of those denominations dated 1927. Admittedly the currency 1927 halfcrown and sixpence are earlier TYPES, but that may not have signified so much in days gone by.

Spink quote £650 in FDC.

Wow, £1100 for the 1927 sets in their horrible cardboard cases? I'll look after mine!

No I wouldn't pay £200 for a VF 1797 2d, but I suspect that Spink's VF would look closer to our idea of EF tbh. I certainly think a genuinely VF specimen is worth at least £100, though GF examples with the usual edge damage ought to be available for around £25 as there's lots and lots of those.

Really don't know the answer to your question Nick, 15'026 mintage for each denomination would make them scarce though. A nice Florin there but the scratch accross Georges bust is obviously the reason its aFDC

I got mine for 90 quid from our leader Chris Perkins over christmas, a bargain in My eyes

The scratch is very light and not visible to the naked eye and only just visible using a magnifier. The camera however picks it up easily.

£90 for yours is dead cheap.

Really?! I've picked up three in the last year for less than £500 each - in the leather cases! I doubt even Coincraft would go as far as £1100!

DNW's last one (June 10 lot 1269) went for as little as £330+premium - albeit with a tatty cardboard case...

Spink's had one in March '10 (lot 314) sold for £460+premium...

Bonhams - six sold in last 18months, all less than £600 inc premium...

Thanks Peck. That does make sense - I hadn't considered year only collectors. The shilling also fits the pattern you suggest.

I think you are all missing an important point. BIN prices on ebay are inflated above Spink prices to cover ebay's 25% or whatever take on every sale. If a Spink price is £100, then the BIN is £120 or £125. That's just common sense by the seller, and in most cases equal stupidity by the buyer. There is one set at £1100, but others at £850. Knock 25% off the latter and you get £637.50 against a Spink list of £650. You regularly see items listed on ebay that are available on the seller's website for significantly less. I'd do exactly the same if selling on ebay because so many people treat it as the only place to buy, so persuading them to pay over the odds is not difficult, whilst ensuring you get a full price after listing costs and fees seems sensible. The extras cost is achievable because so many people are too lazy to search. If people did their homework, ebay sales would diminish somewhat and dealers could make a better living.

Unless the coin sale is really a low value ($2-$8, etc), the cost of eBay charges, and PayPal charges together, are generally in the 15% range total. A low value coin sale can raise that percentage quite a bit though, due to listing & picture charges.
