Not a laugh, just wondered if anyone is following this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Edward-v1-siver-Hammered-coin-/150847991480?pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&hash=item231f3daeb8?

Assuming it's genuine, and I have no reason to think otherwise, and not ruined by say polishing, could be worth a bid. High starting bids often put people off and if you could get it for close to the opening price ....

(I've tweaked the photo for my own purposes)

I think it's good! Yes, watching it, but it'll probably be bought OFF the 'bay platform, can't imagine he'd be able to resist the offers! Are you going to have a go if it survives the 9-days?

Not me, no. I spotted it but I'm saving my pennies! And I'm never sure what ebay thinks of listings ending if there are bids on a item. Not that they can do anything, but a bid is supposed to be a contract ...

It's happened to me dozens of times! I put an opening bid on something, just to keep an eye on it sometimes, and I can forget about it for weeks, until one day I spot it in my ended listings!

Nothing worse than finding a decent too cheap coin in my ended listings. The old memory is not as sharp as it should be.

You've got a sharp eye for spotting the eBay irregularities! Presumeably he outbid the genuine top bidder, and then cancelled the transaction with himself, all ready to live another day in paradise!

Ok, time to spot the difference. Same ebayer, 1 coin in auction that has now ended http://www.ebay.co.u...8212%26_rdc%3D1

And the other, as BIN http://www.ebay.co.u...0709%26_rdc%3D1

The 2 were running side by side, the auction one ended Friday, but it's definately the same coin

He did the same trick with an 1887 gold and silver set earlier this year. I knew what he paid for it as he bought it from a customer of mine, who had bought it from me prior to the hike in bullion prices. Needless to say the auction end price showed him a loss after fees so it went back on as a buy it now. Private listings...........shilling sales!

The auctioned coin was Private, but for a 1927 Florin it's obvious why, he was wanting 195 quid for it, but when you take into account, fees, relisting fees etc then it must all mount up, hence the reasom i never really understood our favourite ebay shiller

counterfeit shilling

Why would anyone want to forge this?

It might be worth a punt - it looks like the real thing. But what if ... the Mint were experimenting with other alloys, like they did with those nickel 1923/24 shillings??

Probably someone experimenting with producing moulds and casting using electrical solder (tin/lead) or some similarly low melting point alloy. You can do it in the oven at home and easily engrave the edge milling too given how soft solder is.

One Pound in 1929 had the purchasing power of about £40.50 today

So a shilling was worth about £2 - ie twice the value of a dud pound coin today - simples :)

Again, not a laugh, but John Newman seems to have a run of Charles II farthings as buy-it-nows on ebay.

I don't know the things from my Uncle George's left lawnmower, but in case anyone is interested you can use this link to look at his other items for sale ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CHARLES-II-FARTHING-1679-/280914453380?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item4167ce6384

You have just denied Mrs Peter of her Chablis and my Cuban cigar this weekend.I couldn't refuse the 1679 after seeing so many.My one is in better condition but a bit of corrosion. Can't say I will sell it though. We all need a few...don't we  Thanks Richard for the heads up..I've bought from John before. :)

Nonsense. Yesterday I was congratulated on converting the previous day's anaemic offerings into something really tasty second time round. It was only braised beef though with veggies, and browned mash sealing in all the flavour. :)
