I wouldn't give either side better than EF. Britannia's fingers are flat holding the trident and so is her thumb on the shield with quite a significant flattened area

The buyer obviously couldn't see passed the lustre.

The seller does seems to have a dedicated following despite sometimes overgrading.

I know Lucido is a successful ebay seller, liked by many, but how on earth did he get over £40 for this???? (assuming it's a genuine sale and not 'something else')!

It's the completists that do it!

They'll have a decent run of lustrous G-V pennies, and their 1915 will be lagging behind all the others. When there's a gap to fill, book values go out of the window. Having said that, Coin Yearbook 2014 says £80 in UNC for this coin, so grade overestimation will play a part too. Shiny must equal UNC.

Weren't many of the coins produced in WW1 in much the same state, due more to die wear than coin wear ? A coin in the original mint bag might not look UNC given such circumstances.

Agreed - but that particular example doesn't seem to have the overall weakness of die wear, more the selective rubbing to the highest points of what looks otherwise to be a reasonable strike.

To be fair, it's an interesting example of why Antimony is not used for currency

Other than because it is anti-money (groan).

I've wanted one of these icon_smile_drool.gif for SO long, a shame it's not something more straight forward like  or something! :)

How did you get :wallbash: to appear for you Peter? I typed the correct code, as cribbed from another forum which uses the same software as ours.

It's just an animated gif that Peter linked to from the coin community forum.

Oh. It's just that at the other forum - which as I say, uses EXACTLY the same hosting software as this - you just type :wallbash: and it appears. I can't for the life of me understand why it doesn't work here too.

I suspect the emoticons are configurable and admins will be able to modify the list of those available.

Ah. That makes sense. There's a separate tear-off window of them at the other forum giving a huge choice, though the list of about 20 or so that appears when you click the above button is roughly the same.

Probably it is because you have a mac which isn't up to it.

Oh, that must be it. A Mac that is so intelligent that it can distinguish between two separate forums and then, of its own free will, decide not to display the graphic on one forum that it does on the other. Yes, that must be it. :P

... and with a "there for" and a grocer's apostrophe thrown in for good measure.

Oh, Proof = Unc. Of course! Silly me. I "neraly" missed that. :P
