Dave, Rob,

Below is the actual comment from my client! A little pompus, don't you think? Its not like we are soliciting members...right! LOL!

"I'm not on that forum but do look at it. There are some unpleasant and vitriolic personal comments on it from one or two members with foul language to boot which is why I wont join."

That actually sounds like something Martin Platt would write, saying that though, if he/she wants to complain i suggest joining and putting Forward their reasons. As Rob has pointed out, most of the language is directed at arseholes on ebay who have or are ripping People off for huge cash sums, hopefully one day your buyer Bob will get ripped off from one of them and we'll see how their language is shortly afterwards. Your buyer should be happy that we've pointed out several biig time sellers on ebay ripping off Joe public instead of moaning

The seller of this lot generally buys silver bullion off ebay and then relists a few months later. I had a set of silver stamps from 1977 which was bullion in a box, i think they won at 20-30 quid. A few months later it was on their ebay as an auction and was sitting at around 50 odd quid, now whether shill bidding is involved i don't know, but they have bought These 2 sets http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231015885032?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D231015885032%26_rdc%3D1

So will be interesting to see what they do with them, but the Price they got them for i think they'd make something on them anyway

a***d clearly wants to win that one!

That one is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!

WHY on earth would someone, with over a day to go, revise his maximum bid TEN TIMES IN TWO MINUTES with no other bidding going on?

It could be a tactic by the seller to encourage bidding or it could be a tactic by the bidder to discourage bidding, not an easy one to decide

I really don't understand all these tactical games played on eBay!

75% of the things I buy on eBay are not destined for the 'folder,' so I am careful 'ish' with my approach...however, by careful, I don't mean I check out who's bidding, and how many bids are on, or how many bids have been placed by someone who's bidding (what's wrong with those people, they could've looked at 50 other coins instead, and maybe bagged a bargain? Do they really believe such nonsense would put off a true adversary?)

I look, I see, and I SNIPE, according to what I want to pay for the coin! With sniping software, you are immune to all the shilling, and fancy bid stacking that goes on!

Viva la Snipe! :)

Edit: just re-read this, and it might be confusing! I didn't mean 'why D&N looks at these things, I meant 'why do people spend all that time stacking and 'fancying-up' their listings, or their intended purchases, to lay a false trail?'

I'm with you Stuart. I just bung my bid in the snipe engine and go for a bath. I use Gixen, and I'm very happy with it.

I do take careful note of what Dave and others discover though, so *name removed* and Martin are excluded from my saved searches, so I don't even see their coins and the shenanigans going on therein.

This is a very interesting discussion for me, I like the psychology of various auction formats. Perhaps a website for a Chinese auction would be fun (although on second thoughts, perhaps not for coins)! Or a Dutch auction ... bit of Will 3 to the lowest bidder? It's beyond me some of this eBay activity, searching for some logic and finding little ...

But you are not 'immune' from shilling with a sniper engine bid, you could still end up paying more than you otherwise would have

Well no, agreed, not exactly, though I'm as immune as I am wondering what comes out of the tap, or wondering what pollutants I breath in our great british fresh air! :D

I use Auction Sniper, I think they are all much of a muchness, but worth every penny! The number of bargains I've missed, when not sniping, would've paid for it over and over again!

I did catch JB for a few coins about two years ago, which I turned a couple of hundred quid a piece on :) maybe that's why he's now a shiller? :D

Out of sight out of mind is definitely best I think! Just see what transpires! Auction Sniper works well for me too, I think you recommended it to me!

That's good going Stuart! Such rich pickings are getting harder to find! Not that I've found more than a few over the years that I have made that sort of mark-up on, but then I'm not a dealer! What I would like is something that captures a bargain BIN before it is snaffled up, anyone know of anything?? It would need to be quite sophisticated!

The BIN area is an area I've never really visited (though I have been watching one particular BIN coin for nearly a year now - it hasn't got to fall very much further and you'll get to see it on here [hammered & QE1]), I always factor it out of my searches, though I do remember Rob saying it was for rich pickings!

Maybe I should take a better look at the 'newly listed' material in future, perhaps later in the year?

You've let the cat out of the bag now, Paulus! :)

Some of my recent IMO 'good value' or even dare I say it 'bargain' purchases have been newly listed BINs ... and I don't mind sharing "too much"! I have picked up a few for my collection that I would say were very under-graded and under-priced, and sold a couple on that have 'proved' that to be the case.

Trouble is I don't have the time (like most) to go through every new eBay or eBin listing every day to sort the wheat from the chaff, so if anyone has a search criterion for, for example, newly listed early milled half crowns VF or better that would be great!! ... but that would be asking a hell of a lot and letting many cats out of many bags!!! Daily checks it is!

On a related note, I wonder if any of our members would voice an opinion on this ... how on earth do some dealers, many on eBay, list so much new stock of, say, early milled silver (my area of interest), every week? Where are they getting it from on such a regular basis?? Bucks coins (Peter, restrain yourself) has plenty of new stock all the time, I'm pretty sure it's not from auctions every week ... yes much of it is over-graded near fine stuff, but where does it come from? He seems to have tons of it, more than anyone on eBay, and seems to turn it over, how does he do that?

House clearances would be my guess.

If you start Wandering Then you'll eventually be all over the place with a collection that looks like a splat against a wall. Don't worry what you Might be missing on eBay and worry about what you actually want. I had a great conversation with a Guy today about my truro crown. He insisted it was in aF grade and offered £400 i fehlt lucky and priviledged but Pointed him towards John Stephenson who also has one in Fine (no Need to thank me John) ;)

Here's a wee snippet on the grading., but because he's the secretary of whatever, he knows more about grading.

We shall just have to disagree I am afraid. I have been the auction secretary of the Derbyshire Numismatic Society for almost 20 years and see a lot of coins so I do know a little bit about grading. I know that it is a contentious issue but I do not wish to argue with you on the subject.

Me, argue about grading???? The coin certainöy isn't aF my friend

never find much in newly listed BIN

the BIN is where most of it should be.

I just wish ebay contributors would get their coins in the correct categories. I would estimate at least 40% are wrong. It would significately reduce the search time.
