Hi i was given a silver 1p dated 1999 in my change from the shop the other day and didnt know if this was real or not...

So i basically have a couple of questions...

1. Is the coin a real coin or is it just a coin someone has made up, i mean did they ever make a silver penny

2. Is the coin worth anything like is there a collectors market or where these mast produced, any help wold be great :)

Chances are someone plated it for novelty purposes, then it got spent.

Silver pennies were made in 2000 and 2006, in both years box sets containing silver versions of circulating coins, maundy coins and a £5 crown were produced in limited numbers (e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=230074074453). But I'm unaware of any silver pennies in 1999.

Hope this helps

Paul

The penny that you describe could of been copper coated steel.

These were produced from 1992.

Quick test is put a magnet on it.
