1990 5p varieties?

Recommended Posts

Are there not 2 types of 1990 small 5p's, one with a sharp rim, the other rounded? (much like the first small 10p varieties?)

I seem to remember that being the case, but can find no reference and I don't have enough 5p's to check!

What planet do you live on Nik a Tron? You're quite young and naive aren't you.

You can't exchange coins in most Bureau de Change places. They just take notes, they don't want to keep tons of world coins in stock. I can safely say that there are no quantities of 5p's within about a 500 mile radius of my house!

Damn! This seems to be the disadvantage of storing my 'minor' collection in drawers, jean pockets and at the bottom of rucksacks! While I have found two round edge 5ps the sharp one is eluding me.

I don't have a camera either so have tried scanning the edge but with little success. So if it's any use at all Chris I'm happy to post you a round edge 1990 5p which you can then photograph at your leisure. Just let me know. I'll keep looking for the sharp one just in case too!

Richard

nik. Half term is it? :P Only joking! We all had to start somewhere (and early Georgian bronze certainly is an ambitious start!). Welcome to the forum! If you get a camera or access to a scanner I'm sure we'd all love to see your aquisitions to date. Just remember, there are always coins but money runs out! Take your time!

I'm not sure that there is a 1990 sharp edge coin. The later ones seem to have sharp edges, but I think perhaps all 1990 have rounded edges.

I have noticed many times that the edge to the new 5p`s and 10p`s have differing edge rims but do they really qualify as being a `variety` or `type`.

I would have thought that it was just the wear in the milling process, like you get with some brand new coins being better struck than others.

Here's a rounded 1990 5p. I guess it's a bit like the chamfered rim 1911 2/6 proof and 1/- but a bit more chamfered.

But is there really also a square edge 1990 small 5p? Has someone got one?

Are those 1990? If so, it proves it, because they're square.

I need to see it with my own eyes! 2 1990 coins side by side showing an angle that shows the date and the edges at the same time!

Of you have both types of 1990 5p nic a tron I'll give you £1 for them (inc postage).

Yes it is 1990 5pence.

Saw 1991 rounded edge, but 1992 onwards square it seems that 1990 have both but also maybe 1991 for 1992 onwards on coins that I have is sharp and square like.

Didnt seen any difference on the die on obverse and reverse.

Thanks Josie.

I'm in the UK next week so I'm going to collect 5p's and see what I find.

I've just checked 20 1990's and they were all rounded.

So if the square exist chances are they will be fairly rare.

I wonder what is the ratio for the 2 type.

Mine is 6:1 if the coin I post is square.

How about you nik?
