1719 rare bugger

This dawned on me the other day.

I had watched this 1719 so called 1/2d...in hindsight obviously a 1/4d on a 1/2d flan....I had taken the description for granted.

I never put a proper bid in ...Then on Sunday I was flicking thru Colin Cooke catalogue 36 with the write ups on 1717 -1719....bells started ringing.

The coin is BMC 813....NO EXAMPLE KNOWN OUTSIDE THE BRITISH MUSEUM (Colin Cookes words).List 36

I think I'm cute when it comes to 1/4ds Ebay/coin dealers et all but I missed this bugger.

I can't bring myself to Email the winner.

I agree that it is a farthing, not a halfpenny, but I would question whether it is struck on a halfpenny flan. I would have thought there would have been more of a surround to the coin, if it had been centrally struck. There should still be a surround beyond the graining if you position a farthing centrally onto a halfpenny flan.

I think the seller has mis-attributed the denomination, but it is still a fascinating coin.

It looks like a double struck farthing.

The winner knows his farthings, so no need to warn them.

Peck could have made his listing a bit clearer!

I think it is a farthing struck on a farthing flan. If you consider the spread of the flan from the initial strike, then an off centre strike would leave a considerable amount of space to one side. Knowing the weight would confirm.

That coin creates a fantastic illusion of 3 strikes although on closer inspection is does appear to be only doublestruck!!
