Can anyone help?? I have been left a large coin collection from my great aunt, in excellent condition with hundreds of coins, ranging from 1800's to current day, also are some square coins from Malaysia, two war medals from first world war and several collector sets. I do not want to keep the collection as I do not have the room to house them. Ideally I need to have valued and sell - can anyone advise?

Thanks :)

I don't know where everyone is today - must have been a heavy night! Sorry to hear of the loss of your Great Aunt

Can you post any pics? There is advice on the Forum about how to do this. Don't clean or polish any coins!

If it is a large collection, it would not be very practical to photograph them all and put them on this website. It would also not help much to simply say 'photograph the best ones' because as a non-collector you could not be expected to know what they were! What you really need is to speak to a dealer or auctioneer for their opinion. Obviously locality is important as it would not be very helpful to advise you to see a dealer in Manchester if you live in Plymouth. Several people on this site would probably be prepared to help you out, but it would be pot luck if you happened to live anywhere near them. Also, if the collection is as eclectic as you say, you may need to refer to more than one person.

First stage therefore, some idea of where you live, and see who jumps!

Thank you for your responses - it's a bit difficult to photograph them because there are boxes and boxes and I am not sure which to photograph.... I live in Birmingham...

You need to speak to a dealer, it may be that your coins are valuable, or if your relative was purely a date collector they may be less so. Age is not necessarily an indicator of value. The only address I came up with in Brum is:

Birmingham Coins

30 Shafrmoor Lane, Acocks Green, Birmingham, B27 7RS

Tel: 0121 707 2808 Fax: 0121 707 2808

Have no idea who they are, so can't recommend. Does anyone else know them or live near Birmingham?

Oh, for anyone else with coins to sell, there are always reliable postal options! For example me. Many people with coins to sell send them to me and I always make an offer based on a relistic proportion of how I will price them up.

I'm always a bit wary of coin dealers especially since seeing one operate when he was going through a collection that an old couple brought into his shop whilst I was there, not buying coins I must add. Althought the collection was quite average there were a few nice slot fillers amongst it but because there wasn't anything particularly exceptional he was only willing to do the right thing and give them about melt for the silver because he couldn't be arsed to sort it through.

Anyway the first thing to do is go through your Aunt's collection and check to see if there is any gold in there. If there is come back here and start asking questions.

I've noticed that non web coin dealers have to be a lot more selective as they have to always offer their best coins, coins that aren't just £1 each, or they are more trouble than they are worth. I find this is the case at coin fairs, in fact I don't even bother taking any normal George VI or Elizabeth II because it doesn't sell at coin fairs and just takes up room.

On a website on the other hand, once they're listed I don't need to do anything. And it's amazing how popular George VI and Elizabeth II coins are! I'm even selling Churchill crowns at a good rate at the moment. If a collection sounds interesting enough and is postable, then I'm all ears and have lots of happy buyers and sellers. I'll also travel to see collections if the value is high.

I can vouch for Chris's integrity and honesty.

I've seen what hoards of dealers can do for the less well informed at coin fairs.

I can reccommend Chris, too! But he is in Germany! Try the address given above, you don't have to accept any offer immediately, you can come back to the forum and discuss it with us! (No hammered coins in there by any chance?) :P

You couls also find dealers via the coin fair in Birmingham as discussed on the thread "Coin Clubs & Fairs'.

I am over on the UK frequently and within the EU it's just like sending within the UK....no VAT, very secure etc.

But, yes try the Brummie address first by all means. I find that in most cases these sort of family accumulations are unfortunately normally run of the mill stuff.

A colleague of my brother was recently left a large accumilation of coins by her father and I was asked to have a quick look through to see if there was anything of value. It was largely bags and bags of the usual well circulated stuff fit to scrap apart from the two half soveriegns.

Sometimes nice things turn up, but it's pretty rare. I would estimate that for every 10 non collectors that contact me with inherited accumulations, probably les than 1 in 10 has something worth while. And probably 1 in 100 has something individually worth more than £30.

But you never know, and quite often the silver value in the pre 1947 adds up to quite a bit more than the seller expects.
