Anglo Saxon Pennies

I have four Anglo Saxon silver pennies and I don't know if they are valuble or not or if they are common/rare. Two are EADRED pennies, one is an EDMUND and one is an EDELSTAN. I would appreciate any information anyone has about them. Thank you!

They look a bit too nice, are they real? I thought I could notice the tell-tale sign of a couple of them being 2 thin coins stuck together, i.e. electrotypes.

They are all genuine and all are individual coins. maybe the photos are badly lit, I don't know. I dug them up myself and I'm 100% certain they are real.

Well if you dug them up then the chances are good! No doubt someone else will be along soon that knows the Ango-Saxon period better.

If those are genuine, they are the best examples I have seen. Are they registered with the authorities? YOC would be the best man to answer your query, as he saves those.

My sentiments too Geordie.

The only time I have seen dug coins in this condition is when they have been in a pot (ie hoard)

I like the coin of ABBA! Though they are Anglo-Saxon, there's definitely a Scandinavian influence there.

I finally had the coins ID'd and valued yesterday and they are worth ££££, you're right. I only have four, no hoard sadly. (I'm not a detectorist or a coin collector, story is I was out on a hike, walking up a steep track and in a moment of good fortune I guess spotted a coin sticking out of the mud. The soil was crumbly and loose (eroding I guess) I just dug around with my hands for about 15 min and found the other three, they were all no more than an inch below the surface) I was going to just try and sell them until you mentioned having them documented and recorded which I hadn't thought of but I see would be the sensible thing to do. I'll have to search the net and find out how to do it. thanks.

I've attached some better quality photos and I am still interested in any information anyone could offer about the moneyers Leofric, Byrtherd, Osulf and Abba.

Not much is known about specific moneyers, only those listed in the Domesday and yours are much earlier than that!

There doesn't appear to be any rare moneyers on your coins for the issues, so you just noticed these whilst walking? Have you gone back with a metal detector since?

I know it's cruel to ask but are you interested in selling? I'm after some better examples for my collection and these could be the tickets, I pay very good prices too!
