lots of coins, no knowledge

Recommended Posts

i have just acquired several bags of british coins, most are old silver ones but there are a couple of copper. i know nothing about coins, i don't even know what predecimal means. i'm sure it would be to cumbersome to try to list them all on here. there are many different kinds. is there anyone out there i could mail a list to that could tell me if any of them are worth looking at? i have 2 shillings, 1 shilling, different kinds of sixpence (lots of them) one pennys, one florin (lots of them) copper half pennies, and an assortment of others. most are dated 1920 and later. and a lot of the same value coins have a different design. if anyone would be interested in looking at a list i will make up one and mail it.

Hi oldjoe78 and welccome to the forum, predecemal is the term used to describe Great Britain coinage before 1967 or about then as the there wasn't an exact line drawn in the ground at the point between the old pounds shillings and pence and the then new decimal pounds and 100 pence to the pound system we currently use.

If you have a large assortment of coins and are thinking of taking up collecting the first thing you will need is a book. As a starting point you can't go wrong with a copy of Chris's Collectors coins GB.

thanks for the book info, i am going to the library this morning to see what they have. no, i am not taking up collecting, my uncle was in the army stationed in england during ww2 and he was a collector, when he died he left the coins to my aunt. she recently died and left them to me. i am just now going thru them to sort stuff out. since i know nothing about them it will take a while to seperate and make a list of them. there are several folders with collections in them ,about 6 bags with 100+ coins in each. lots of one shilling, two schilling, six pence, half penny, one penny, one florin, and a few other assorted ones. since i do not collect coins (i always thought they should be spent) i will at some point sell them. once i find out what i have and an approximate worth. there are also a lot of pre 1964 silver washington quarters. if my library does not have a book i will purchase the one you suggest. if anyone is looking for a particular coin i will be happy to let them know if i have it as i go thru and make a list. i have several of the three pence like the picture on this site with what looks like 3 flowers on it.

Are you in America then?

It might be quicker to pack them up and send them to me. Other members here will vouch for my trustworthiness, and if you have no interest in them it could eat into your time sorting them out, and you may find at the end of it that they have little worth.

Anything I buy is either bought for 60% of how I price it, or in the case of coins not of good enough standard to be sold to collectors I always pay face value or scrap value (which can mount up with silver coins) whichever is higher. Actually I received a parcel just now containing scrap silver coins, should be about £250 worth I think.

thanks, but no thanks, i am retired and time is not a factor with me. yes, i am in louisiana, usa. you never know, i might learn something. i came across one that looks like some kind of roman coin about the size of our half dollar dated 1806 with a mans head on one side and a seated woman on the other, with letters onthe head side that says georgius III. looks like it's made out of some kind of copper. going thru them all should be really interesting.

That's a George III halfpenny. 1806 is a pretty common date in average condition.

Hi oldjoe.

Like all other users of the forum, I too would vouch for Chris's trustworthiness. If you just want to find out what the coins are then you could have a look at my website www.coinsgb.com as long as you can make out a date or a monarchs name you should be able to find out what they are or more about them. If you get stuck and are able to take a picture of the coin why not post a picture on this forum and I'm sure someone will be able to help. As for values, my site doesn't list values but I would also recommend buying one of Chris's books as a guide. They are very competitively priced and informative. Being able to asses a coins value goes hand in hand with being able to grade the coin. This process can take a while to learn and I'm afraid many beginners tend to overgrade their coins as they would like their coins to be worth more than they are.

Good lick and haver fun!

thanks for the info, i went to the library this morning and they did not have a good book on english coins. i took a printout of this site with me and they are going to order his book ( they are very helpful and did a search of all the other area libraries ) i am assuming from looking thru some of the coins that they do not have a mint mark on them like our coins do. most of these are in really good shape and there will only be a handfull that you can not read everything. i sorted thru all the sixpence and i have four different kinds. i guess everything i have will be predecimal since my uncle left over there i think in 1950. if you have any you would like me to set aside while looking let me know. i will make a complete list by date and type. and chris was right, it will take some time.
