John Kendall historic medal 1480

Recommended Posts

I have a large 56mm diameter 1480 silver medal of John Kendall (Jo Kendal). 'Jo Kendal Rhodi Tvrcpellerivs' and a raised portrait on the obverse and a coat of arms and 'tempore obsidionis turcorum MCCCCLXXX'. Weighs around 68 grammes.

Managed to find out quite a bit about Kendall and the Knights of St John, siege of Malta etc - but not the medal. Are any of you wise folks into historic medals?

Any help would be appreciated. post-4146-1205685011_thumb.jpg

The workmanship is quite crude Andy, in fact it looks to be cast from a soft metal alloy. I know the date in Roman numerals is 1480, but I would very much doubt that was the date it was made, as the style is very un-15th century.

It may be rare, in that not many were made/are left, but I don't think the character is famous enough or the medal of good enough workmanship for it to be worth more than a few quid (i.e £10).

Perhaps someone else will have a different opinion.

I suspect it's a repro or recast of this John Kendall medal

It looks as if the originals were bronze. My guess is yours is a modern souvenir, perhaps from Rhodes or wherever he was born in England? Though if it were silver ....

Thought I'd put it about a bit myself as well. Thanks for that first bit of info. I'll try and sort that letter out for you later - just really busy packing at the moment.

All the best

Andy
