1799 Farthing

Recommended Posts

Guest suunto

In examining a recently acquired 1799 farthing, I noted that the date was strongly doubled as well as the letters in "REX"; the letters in "GRATIA" are less obviously doubled. additionally, there is an obverse die break extending through the middle of the letter A in GRATIA to the top left of the R in REX, and a reverse die break extending from the rim through the letter F in FARTHING. Basically, I am asking whether or not this is a known variety. Except for an odd bit of flattening (weak strike?) on hair curls near George's ear, I believe the coin would grade at least EF with some lustre remaining. I apologise for the lack of photos; I'm having trouble getting my camera to communicate with my computer.

Doubled letters and die breaks are not usually considered as varieties, merely mishaps as a result of mass production.
