George I Coin (1714-1727)

Hi,

I have recently found a coin which is very worn and thin.

After researching on the internet, it is definetly George I, 1714-1727. But i can't find a coin with the correct reverse. The reverse of the coin is the following:

Any help on what the coin is would be brilliant.

I don't think it's meant to be a coin, just a coat of arms. That coat of arms (with Hannovarian stuff lower right) was never used in that shape on a Geo II coin. The spade shape like that was used on the spade Guineas of Geo III and, much much more commonly on the spade Guinea imitation Victorian gaming tokens.

Are you sure it's not Geo III? Ignore the date as they often read 1701 instead of 1791 and are not always actual dates.

I am not sure.

That image of the coat of arms is identicle to the reverse of the coin (put an image there as the camera won't pick the fine detail of the coin up). You can hardly see any writing but it looks like 'GeorgiVs' along the left hand side. And the image is facing to the right which George I coins did. (George II all faced to the left i believe).

And if you also search George III on Wikipedia, the coat of arms is slightly different, whereas the coin is defiently the image posted above.

I have found a lot coins on websites, but none seem to have that image on the reverse.

The only coins I can think of with the spade shape coat of arms just like that one are the Spade guineas and half guineas of Geo III. And that would fit too as all Geo III coins faced to the right. The spade shape shield should also be crowned.

But....I'm sticking with brass gaming token. Does it have the weight and feel of gold, or is it most definitely brassy?

Do google searches on George III spade guinea and Victorian imitation Guinea gaming tokens, or words to that effect.

It is crowned yes. Will do some more searches now. Feels very light and very thin. 25mm across.

This is the closest i have matched so far:

But the one i have is a spade shape, not the square effect.

Chris you are right (although it isn't a token)!.

It is a George III Spade Half guinea.

Can see 1797 on it now i know it is around then! How much is it worth

It couldn't be anything else! You better post pictures though if you can. Most half guineas are brass imitations (or even forgeries). I hope that it is a proper one, although it sounds very worn if you can't see the III so will probably only be worth bullion value (around £50).
