Storing my Coin Collection

Hi everyone!

I would like to find out who does what and how they do it in order to store their coin collection in the best way.

I know that coins should be kept in plastic bags / envelopes which don't contain PVC, or better, coins should be slabbed. But it's obvious that some coins don't have a great value, so getting them slabbed is a bit of waste of money. Is it necessary to keep the right humidity and the light protection?

To store my coins I use plastic coin bags, which I got from a bank, but I don;t know if these bags contain PVC, does anybody know? Using these bags isn't the best job I know 'cos they're too big for one coin and I usually end up storing up to 20 coins in the one bag so my collection is in a big mess at the moment and I'd like to change it. I realise what I need to do is get some proper coin envelopes but at the moment my funds are really tight so if anyone has any good DIY tips and tricks, I'd be very grateful if you'd share them with me.

it depends how grand you want your collection to look and how much money you have to spend! I think you'd be best with an album and some individual coin envelopes for those that don't quite fit in the album. I wouldn't have thought bank bags are that safe but for low value coins where the value is next to nothing then that probably doesn't matter either. Why don't you start with 100 of my KLAR envelopes and progress from there.

The system should charge you £3.50 postage, which is the same as to the UK because I send them from Germany.

The KLAR are actually quite expensive as coin envelopes go......but, I think they are probably the cheapest that don't contain PVC and are safe for coins. I'll be posting these tomorrow, many thanks.

Expensive? For 100 KLAR with posting & packaging I paid €13.34 which works out just over 1.3 cent each!

Personally I wouldn't go near slabbing with a disinfected bargepole. Do you want your coins to be enjoyed for their visual and tactile appeal, or do you want to see them entombed in a little plastic coffin where you can gaze on the corpse? Slabbing "kills" a coin in more ways than one. Not only does it render it inaccessible, it also attempts to offer a definitive grading which can't be challenged. Where's the fun in not being able to hold your coin, or discuss its grading among friends and comparing opinions? Numismatics is an art, not a science; the questions are always more interesting than the answers.

Sorry to hijack this thread but my question is vaguely related to the subject.

Can anybody recommend a coin album for my young daughter to use to store her collection. I have run through what is available on this site plus on Ebay and to be quite honest I'm spoilt for choice. Many of the coins she has at the moment are no bigger than a Crown with the exception of an old "Cartwheel" which is a hefty piece.

I need to get a move on as its her birthday on the 25th and need to get something by then.
