1834 William IIII silver coin

Recommended Posts

Guest Louise

I have been looking through a small coin collection belonging to my dad. There is one which interests me but I can't find information on it.

It is silver and VERY small - diameter is 1.2cm or a little under 1/2inch.

Markings - Guliemus IIII head facing right. The back shows a crown and wreath, date 1834 and the numbers 1 1/2.

It is the use of the fraction sign for half which has thrown me. I can find no reference to it at all.

Can anyone help me out at all to identify this coin?

Louise

Louise,

It's a 'Three halfpence' (or one and a half pence). It was made for use in the colonies, but because it is just like larger GB denominations it's often included as a 'British' coin.

Values are just a few pounds in F-VF condition.

I love threehalfpences, I am very fond of my own as it is very rare, and find them fascinating generally because they were used in the colonies, and they are so small!

Thanks for the information. This is so interesting. I feel like I'm holding a little piece of history in each coin. We have had these coins for years but I've never tried to find out anything about any of them until now.

I can afford that one but it would use up all my money! The 1839 one doesn't look bad though. Might buy one of them! :D

You are!
