2008 20 PENCE COIN WITH STRANGE MARKING NEXT TO MD

Recommended Posts

gooday peoples

i have had this new 20 pence coin from 2008. it is the new shield version and has the date on it but on the bottom of the coin where the matthew dent stamp is there is an extra piece of metal that looks like a number 1. i have done a little reasearch on it and did find an answer that it could be a first of batch for this coin.

is this true or is it just an extra lump of metal left after minting the coin or has anyone got one of these coins

thanks

That same thing was also reported here a few months ago. I believe it is a '1' and probably (I don't know if the Royal Mint confirmed it) is some kind of die number. I've not been able to find one myself; how much do you want for it?

Thanks.

It has slight wear and signs of contact with other coins, as you'd expect for a coin that has circulated for up to 10 months. I'd pay £50 for it.
