2009 Penny Anomaly

Has anybody spotted this one before?

I've included the tails side in case there's something on that which I've missed.

Just looks like a clogged die. If it was overflow then the metal would normally be quite even but this one seems quite rough. Interesting error nonetheless! :)

I'm guessing I can't quite retire early just yet then. =p

Is it just me or are these new design coins being made a little more sloppily? The 20p especially! I've got a few of them where there're excess metal spots all around the design.

I think you are quite right. My undated 2008 20p has several knobbles of metal on the queen's portrait - maybe this raises the value into the millions!! I wish. Also, I have a 2005 20p where the excess metal on the queen's head appears as if she is using a bluetooth. I've also seen several pennies with minor raised bits of metal which also suggests that they are not too careful about quality, although I suppose the sheer quantity being made means that some errors are bound to creep in.

I first noticed things going downhill in around 2004, the 20p in particular seem to be quite prone to all kinds of issues.

Here's a 2004, note the lines radiating out from the centre of the coin in all directions. They look like stress marks. A lot of 2004s seemed to have this. I hadn't noticed it much prior to 2004.

That design would be perfect with the text "All Hail the Almighty Queen!" written around the edge. =p

I've got a number of 2008 20p which have extra metal blobs. One I have has a missing spot on the Tails side down that line.
