Coinex 2009

Did anyone make it along to coinex this year. This was my first attendance and to be quite honest I was rather disapointed. 95% of the exhibitors where selling either hammered or gold or hammered gold, there was next to no 19th centry milled where my interests lay.

I just managed to make it worthwhile by finding a 1902LT marked up as a HT so I did the right thing and gave them the full asking price, £25 I thought oh well I already have an UNC so I'll knock it out on ebay and it'll cover my day out. Then I looked a bit closer.......

As for Coinex, any good milled (early or late), or Roman, or tokens, would have made it fine for me, but it sounds like a real dog.

As for CoinEx, the only time I went I was utterly disappointed by the overly commercialised stock and so vowed never to return. The London Coin Fair is far superior in my opinion.

I would recomend the Midland fair at the NEC motorbike museum.Every month and 4 times per year when they let all dealers in.

Take cash and a decent eye glass (the lighting in variable) and enjoy from 10p coins to thousands.

I actually take my family up and stay at the Coventry Village hotel with its 25m pool.(less than £70 including breackfast thru laterooms)

My kids actually insist I go

Last time I bought Vol 1 North for £10 and a 1770 1/2d in EF for £23 (the seller was a silver mulla)

There are bargains but be prepared to dig deep.

OK, Gary, I give up. I see the double striking of the inner leg, but even with that the tide is well below the point the legs meet is it not ?

Having spent 10 minutes going boss eyed staring at the two, I think, if anything, your '2' is even further to the right in relation to Britannia's gown than the CC one ?

Yes - I agree absolutely. When I was still actively dealing, I'd get my stock from two sources : 1. auctions 2. the Midlands Fair. You really could pick up some great bargains there. Stephen Lockett (who is no mug, let's face it) had trays at various prices, and I remember getting a 1750 halfpenny not far off VF from his £6 tray. And another dealer I picked up a 1944 silver 3d almost BU for £10.

The best day though, was when a guy there had a HUGE tray of assorted coins for 25p each. I was picking around and he said "That's all unsorted - you might find some good stuff there." So I delved deep ... as well as several pre-1920 silver coins, I found an 1888 sixpence EF, and a 1951 brass 3d almost BU !!!
