Hello all,

As an amature coin collector as a child in the mid-sixties, I had ammassed what one would call a "boy's collection" of all coins good and bad. There is, however, an 1841 half crown which I seem to remember was given to me by one of my uncles as a child.

The wallet I came across only a few days ago lying in a cardboard box with other boyhood treasures. I have attached a couple of images of the coin for an opinion of its rarity and maybe its condition.

I hope this is of interest to other forum members.

Thank you,

Regards,

Ian.

Decent grade, but looks a bit polished with all the shiny bits. That is a pity because a nice UNC would make £4-5K. Book price for an EF which yours certainly makes is £2500-3K, though any cleaning would knock that back. You can't tell without seeing it in the hand. 1841 is THE desirable date for the series. Even cleaned you are better off than you originally thought. It's a rare and much sought after coin, and you are a lucky man.

Really!!!

You have taken my breath away - are you sure? The coin is as was found in the pocket in the album, the highlights on the head is reflection from the windowwhen I took the photograph, I understand it is ifficult to see this without it being in the hand so to speak. I am speechless. Well, my dear old departed uncle must have known, although it would have been gifted to me mid to late sixties. Thank you very much rob for the information,I'll have another search!

Regards,

Ian.

I agree with Rob - I'd place it a little less than EF (obverse) to be honest, but the reverse is certainly EF and has beautiful toning. At book you would certainly expect to rate it a sub-£3k coin, but at the right auction, with the right buyer, who knows? Book price is only a guide for key dates of a series. I envy you your coin! The only early Victorian halfcrown I have is 1844, which is really not rare at all.
