george III gold coin 1763

Hi guys,

Id appreciate any info on this coin. It was found in Ireland (by my granddad) but doesn't say 'Hibernia' on the back, so it

was minted in England? Any idea what it is worth? It seems to be made of gold and is quite heavy. Sorry I don't know much about coins.

On the back are the letters MBFETHREFXDBEFLOSRIATETE. Anyway Ive attached photos so you can see for yourself,

Thanks

Mary

Hi there, it looks like you have the luck of the Irish, what you have there is a Guinea spink number 3726, it looks a good very fine grade to me and worth around 2500 pounds.

I hope my assumption is correct, am sure one of the older collectors of the forum will give a positive ID, but it looks very much like it

Thanks for your quick reply, gosh if it was worth anything near that my mum would be delighted! Also it would mean even if she didnt want to sell it she better keep it somewhere a bit more secure than where its kept at the moment. What does that number 3726 mean? Thanks again

Whoa there! Gold doesn't tarnish or discolour, which is one of its main attractions as a metal. That doesn't look gold at all. So unless it's a bad photo and is a gold colour in real life, I wouldn't jump to hasty conclusions. It might be a gold washed lead counterfeit, or copper. In fact there looks like traces of copper lustre?

mary234, can you take a photo or scan showing the true colour of this coin? As far as design is concerned, it looks good, but the colour is quite wrong.

the reverse of a guinea should be M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E.

Another way to come at the problem is to weigh it.

It should be 24mm in Diameter and weigh 8.35 grams.

There are many Brass imitations of these coins in existence.

Let us know how you get on ?

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies. The reverse is M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E. I will upload more photos

but it is a really strong gold colour, which didn't translate in the photos. The best thing to do would be to weigh it and see if it is as it should be but might be a few weeks before I am back in my mothers house. Ill keep ye posted!

 I hope its the weight, it will make me feel better for the panic i set in

Also Mary, the spink number refers to the spink book of coins, each coin has a number logged to it, that number would be the number for the coin in the book

What's most annoying is that a collector never finds these things in their backyard lol

The colour looks much more like it! I will await the weight report with interest. But even then, I would arrange to have it validated by a reputable dealer, just to be sure, to be sure. :D

Thanks for the advice about getting it checked by a reputable dealer. Any recommendations of one in Dublin (or failing that any where in Ireland, North or South) - would be nice to know for sure
