Hi I have still in case a Queen Elizabeth Queen mother Crown

I realise this is a crown but on reverse it says FIVE POUNDS. Am I correct this is legal tender for five pounds and banks will take it?? I realise that shops may not.

Is it a proof or the circulated variety ?

I've got one of the 'ordinary' ones and many times have I thought I ought to take that to the post office, but I've never quite summoned up the cojones to do it - seems like a lot of fuss for a fiver.

Yes a proof Cupro Nickel coin weight 28.28g siameter 38.61mm issued by Royal mint in special box with information about the life og QE the Queen mother. Issued by Royal MINT Collector's club Cardiff 1990. Other part of the outer box has picture of the Queen Mother as child.

I cannot see any with nice boxes like this for sale on Ebay issued by Royal Mint for Collectors club so how much is it worth guys? Anyone interested in buying drop me a line. The outer box lips are starting to open but otherwise very nice...

I was blabbering on about the 2002 £5 coin.

Chuck it up on ebay with a 99p start. I find ebay to be very reliable for getting market value if it's a desirable coin. If it's not - well, then who cares anyway, you might as well be shot of it ?

My gut feeling is that you'd do well to get face for it, but you never know, only takes two to want it....

That's the commercial piece not the proof which is in silver. Take it to the post office and get your fiver, much less hassle.

1. Crowns are now worth £5 face (used to be five shillings). They are definitely legal tender, though most shops might refuse to take them.

2. You have the 'sealed in carton' example rather than 'loose from Post Office', listed in Spink about £2 or £3 more than the loose one. However, actually getting the Spink price is a different matter altogether. You might be lucky on eBay, you might not. At any rate it's not worth less than £5!
