1833 Sovereign with errors, possibly unique

Recommended Posts

Hello people, ok so i have bought this mighty beast, and i will say, it was only bought to sell because i saw 2 definate errors in it, with a possibility of 4. Please don't scream at me, you have to understand, i am at this moment in time unemployed, and what i paid for the coin was a mighty chunk of cash, and dare i say it, i wanted to make a few pounds on it, so please don't chastise me for this. The coin in question is a William IIII sovereign 1833, a rarity in itself, and as you all know, i like you to hunt the error, so 2 pix of the OBV and REV are here for you to view and see if you can find the 2 definate, and possible 4 errors. If i am correct, this could possibly be a unique coin.

Hello Mate,

I see no one has answered yet, so I'll be first. We're online friends right ? And you're expecting a reaction I think;

1. Definite not definate.

2. There is a part of me that doesn't believe you bought it, it's just a photo from the web.

3. You've been told, not by me, that errors and mistrikes have to be accepted by the community to be worth anything. It's unlikely you are going to find a new one - however good you may be.

4. If you still think after the last 3 months that you are going to turn a profit quickly, you need a blow from the fish.

5. I'm sorry to hear you are out of work, I hope you haven't done anything silly with this, admittedly nice sov of the sailor king.

Other than that, nice coin, look forward to seeing some pics from hand.

Regards as always.

Hi Azda,

Its a nice coin. The top part of X in REX is filled in, which is a chip in the die. There is something on the N in BRITANNIA possibly another chip in the die. I don't think its an N struck over something.

Honestly although interesting, I don't think these error would warrant a premium for the coin. Error collectors usually look for major errors (off centre strike, brockage etc.) on coins and variety collectors usually look for a change in design or an error that has been man made like and overdate or over stamped letters like or an N over say an E.

You could list it on ebay starting at what you paid for it and list the errors with the hope someone might be interested and it might do well but if you send it off to a major auction or a specialist, I don't think the errors are major enough to get them too exited.

Hus

I echo what £400 and Huss have said. There's damage to the O in ANNO but it doesn't look like an error, ditto the A. And the G in DG looks odd, but not "variety odd" if you know what I mean. All else seems to check out : it's Type 2 bust, WW has stops, legend and design look right.

You going to let us in on the secret?

Well basically most of you have spotted a few errors in it, and yes 400 we could say that we are now online buds etc, and yes you are also correct in saying that it was an image gallery picture taken from the website in which i did actually buy it from lol. I do realise that these things need to be checked and verified, and it could possibly be a die clash or so, but if you take a look at the 1st N in Britanniar you will see a strike running across the letter, and also if you put your finger over the second leg of the N and run your eye to the A next to it i am more than sure it is an N over an A, also when your finger is over said leg, do you not think that it looks like an A?

Nice.

IME it's very difficult to macro photograph gold coins square on, there's always too much reflection. If you tilt it, to avoid the glare, there's always a part of the coin not quite in focus.

I hate to admit, but scans are often more useful with gold

Did you say what grade you bought it as, I can't remember ?

Rgds.

It was graded as EF+

Have to say I was thinking GVF, although the second lot of photos look better than the first, but grading is meaningless if you paid the right money.

Yes Peckris, add a zero and another €100 and you'll be in the region

Not having an recent Spink, I can't comment Sir.

What does the good book say is the value of this coin in VF ?

Spink 2010 prices it as £750 VF and £1750 EF. I haven't got my copy of Collectors Coins GB 2010 yet.

Thank you.

sooo, it's definitely not a sellers market in VF at the moment and Spink is always a little bit 'toppish', so I'm going to discount Spink by 20% = £600.

Anyone want to argue violently with that, please do.

Rgds as always.

CCGB quotes it at 1500 in EF. I also sent the pictures to a dealer in the UK and he said it was worth between 1400 and 1600 in its grade

It's early.

Well, if you can get him to pay that then you have done well IMO.

As we have said many times before, it is not an exact science
