Guest ITZUKI Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Hi all,Posting for a friend who was cleaning up his house prior to moving and he found this old coin, http://img248.imageshack.us/i/1002566.jpg/http://img189.imageshack.us/i/1002567z.jpg/I have done a little bit of research and found out that it might be from 1623 or thereabouts, Charles the first maybe? The only site ive found had one but it was very worn and this one is in near mint condition.I have had a look under a microscope and there may be a tiny A on the front and I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere that they were minted in Aberystwyth?I may be all wrong and find out that it came in a cereal packet in the 80's! but I thought I would ask here as it looked the place to be!thanksITZUKIjust found the link to the site i think i saw it on http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/C/Charles1st.htm Quote
TomGoodheart Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 (edited) It's a Charles II third issue threepence. 1662 ish. Whether it's real or a modern reproduction coin, I'm less sure.Edit: Quite likely it's a modern pewter repro made by Ancestors of Dover I'm afraid. Edited May 27, 2010 by TomGoodheart Quote

I think my friend was thinking it was worth £80 ish lolIs there a way to test if its pewter? Quote
Peckris Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Before I saw the reply I was going to say it looks like a repro! The colour is all wrong, and it is probably way too thick? I've seen several repros and they often look like that one, but that's not definitIve of course. Quote

I think my friend was thinking it was worth £80 ish lolIs there a way to test if its pewter?I expect jewellers can do that, but for us ordinary folks at home, I'm not sure. The real deal should be around 1.5g if you have any accurate digital scales. But the main thing is often the thickness, actual coins will be thinner than replicas and pewter feels .. slicker (difficult to explain!) Probably the best way is to get a coin collector or dealer to look at it. Since replicas aren't designed to deceive people the difference between one and a real coin is usually pretty clear to anyone with a bit of experience. Quote
