HELP WANTED WITH GEORGE 11 COIN

Recommended Posts

Guest james-aitch

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to this forum, I was just wondering if any members can help me.

my grandfather left me a chest full of coins about 20 years ago, for about 12 years I never opened it or took interest in them but about 8 years ago I deceiced to take a look and it got me hooked!

One of the coins I’m having difficulty in identifying is in the pics below, I can see it is a George 2nd two pence in silver.

Is it Maundy money?

Is it of high valued? Should I get it insured?

Pls can anyone help me?

N.B. I’ve got loads of coins and it's taken me years to understand them, hope you can all help!

Many thanks

James

It goes under the general classificiation of Maundy money, but I'm not sure when the 1-4d ceased to be a circulating coin and only produced for the Maundy ceremony (can't find the reference at the moment). Either way, it grades somewhere between Fine and VF which have prices of £7 & £25 in the current Spink edition. They aren't rare and yours seems a reasonably attractive example for the grade. It isn't worth insuring.
