What's the biggest bargain you've had

Recommended Posts

About 10 years ago I was in a jewellers and he had a box of coins at £2.50 each.

I went through the box and picked out 20 pre 1920 halfcrowns in EF to GEF and he gave me 10% discount.

The kind of lucky break you can only dream of B)

Nice! Even if they were all 1915 you could still turn a nice profit on them ;)

From an antique centre I got a 1875 Indian Head cent and a 1863 farthing both in VF for £1.50 each.

Both were traded in at the Midland coin fair...as good as cash in your pocken(pardon the pun  )

I have also picked up from a jewellers a 1893 JH head 3d from his box of 3d's for the pricely sum of 45p it was in GF.

My biggest bargain by far, was a 1861, 6 over 8 Victorian Penny, in GF. I paid $35.00 for it not knowing what is was, and had it identified here on the Forum by Custard66, and others. I recently sold it on eBay for $2,100. The sale even made "View from the Bay" in Coin News!

Probably a once in a lifetime find!

Back when eBay was new (c. 1997), I bid on a lot of about 5 or 6 brass 3ds in reasonable grade ... from the pics, I could see a 1949 and it looked pretty good. I won the lot for $7, and the 1949 3d turned out to be aEF ... not a bad buy - and the seller emailed me with "you got yourself a real bargain!" ... yes indeed!

Also got a sovereign for $66 back in 2003 when the proce of gold was much lower, but even then, they were selling for about $90 each.

Andy,

Probably my best eBay bargain was a 1842 currency threepence in GEF that I bought for £29 and sold, because I already had one, for £265. However, I think that the buyer may have had the last laugh, because after it was sold and before it was sent, I noticed that the '3' was over another digit, probably a '2', so the buyer may have got an interesting variety as well as a quality coin.
