Rare Silver British Penny?

Recommended Posts

Guest staceycooper88

Hi, I'm new to this and definately no expert, but i was hoping that you guys could help me out :P

...a few months ago i came across a 2008 SILVER British penny. It is exactly the same as a normal penny in every way, apart from the fact that it is slightly thicker and obviously it's silver in colour. The coin doesn't seem to be silver plated, as when scratched the silver does not come off the coin. Which makes me believe that it isn't made from the same material as a normal penny. I would be intrigued to find out if anyone could shed any light on this, as i have not heard of any pennys of this colour, from this era. many thanks in advance for your responses. Stacey

Hi Stacey,

What you have could be a penny struck on a foreign planchet (different coin blank, metal). Or I don't know if you know this but since 1992 copper plated steel has been used to produce pennies, so perhaps the copper plating has come off or wasn't correctly applied to the blank before striking.

Regards,

Hus

Hi - If this is the same coin that was listed on eBay with some ridiculous claims originating from the local press then you may find that some of us have already contacted you and that this coin has been "discussed" here already. If not then please ignore.

Dave.
