Strange 1936 Penny

Recommended Posts

Ok, seriously it's not the best looking or highest graded coin, but look at the date, to the left of the 1, is that another smaller 1? Also the P & Y in PENNY look out of line, unless its the photo

No, not IMO, the die isn't very clean and there are 'bits' all the way up from 6 O'clock to 9 O'clock.

As for the lettering, well, mine's exactly like that.

I can obviously enlarge my picture and for me its definately a 1, i do see what you mean though about bits around it, but i'm positive its a 1. We'll see when it arrives though  If you wish, send me a pm with your email address and i'll send a bigger image, only if you wish. Ok i've done some enlarging myself. What i think is a 1 also has a line just like this 1 on the bottom

I can see what you're saying, but it's not a '1' it's a piece of something that has got onto the die.

You're tilting at windmills again Don. ;)

That certainly looks like a 1. Obviously we'll know better when you have it in the hand. Looks similar to the viccy penny that was sent for authentication?

Having handled heaps and heaps of 36 Pennies I can safely say I have never seen anything like it.

Still waiting on the Viccy penny John, will be posting pictures first before i send it off, could'nt let you all sit there in suspense, and i appreciate the feedback from members of the forum, so pix first then off it goes. And yes this 1936 is definately strange, i'm about 80% sure that its a 1

It might be a small 1 that got stuck in the die 400  Its a 1 my friend, time and new pix will tell, probably by next week, it only cost 3 euros, so no big loss either way.

Don x

Chickens and eggs Don!

It might just be a 1 shaped die flaw :D

Maybe you could send it to the BBC and they could feature it on the One Show :lol::lol:

I have come across similar things on farthings, that have seriously resembled additional numerals, and allsorts, but when I sit back and think about it and get my level head on, I always find a plausible explanation. I am not discounting it as a 1, but I will reserve judgement until a magnified clear image is provided. B)

I think you would need to magnify to at least x60 to be definitive. It is surprising what die cracks can resemble, but once magnified we will have a better idea

You'll soon find out then.

I think it's a blodge of something above another blodge of something, giving the appearance of a "1". There's some more muck between the "3" & "6".

But until you get coin in hand, who knows for certain.

yes i saw the crap between the 3 and 6 but nothing between 1 and 9 then what looks like a perfect 1, but it will soon be in hand to have a serious good going over

Ok, am a little cheesed off. The dealer has sent me a completely different coin and i'm seriously not amused. Dealers gallery pic and the one he's sent here. If you look at the OBV pic i took, you can see dirt inbetween EX in REX, but nothing on his picture. I think he may have spotted the marks under the date personally. I have emailed him and waiting on a reply

Probably safer not to post anything unusual until you have the coin in hand.

Mind you many non-numismatic Ebay sellers often do not understand we are interested in a specific coin, and use stock/library pictures. I've been caught this way, but not on anything of value. Nothing enough for me to get too upset bar an explanatory email to the seller.

Agreed. Try not to alert sellers if you spot an anomaly.

Also, I like the phrase, "the coin you see is the coin you get"

Well he gave me a scenario that he had many of these blah blah blah, but not according to his website. Am more than sure that 1 he's spotted it himself when getting it ready to send, or 2 he's read the boards, either way i'm not finished with it. I want the coin i paid for. I even sent him the lagernumber of the coin, so he can't say he can't find it etc.

Another email will be sent today when i have time.
