A nice coin but has copper gone mad?

Recommended Posts

I don't know Dave. Charles I shillings have been those prices for bog-standard coins for a while. Yes, they have a little silver in them but only what? £1.20/g? So that's only £7 or so. It's seemed to me for a while that most copper coins are cheap; or at least, not as expensive as the sort of thing I yearn after! And high quality coins are most always more desirable than rarities in average or less condition.

Plus there's the fact that interest rates are almost nil. Maybe people are thinking that alternative investments like coins might do better than putting cash in a bank or building society?

Yes Tom i believe a lot more people are investing in coins instead of putting it into banks, thus pushing prices upwards, i wonder if it will all end in tears like the housing markets and banks collapsing. I have my eye on a little something, so fingers crossed and we'll see how it goes later, whatch this space (or at least coin aquisition of the week )

I've been concentrating on maundy recently and the prices have jumped alarmingly. A year or so ago you could pick up singles for £20, now I'm regularly being beat on ebay at £35.

This one gobsmacked me a couple of weeks ago:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1861-queen-victoria-penny-ex-condition-/110587958044

However I think it's an F32 (6+F)? If so then Gouby gives a rarity value of R8 which is "10-25 possibly known" so maybe the price is right!

I was watching that one as well Beebman, a bit above my price range right now though

Mixed thoughts about this... mainly because just before reading Dave's post, I put an identical 1914 penny on e-bay for £25 'buy it now'. I won't complain if I get it though.

Could this one not be a case of two people going in with way over the top snipes and somebody coming a cropper?

I'm not sure about that, but if you look at the bids, there was what looks like some shill bidding yesterday ~ although the eventual winner made their snipe on the 5th.

That's very very inconsistent. The 1914 is way overpriced. But i can understand the 1868 - it looked EF and is a scarce date so less than £150 seems fair to me.

I definitely agree with you about the 1868.

Don't think it was sniped Derek, it was standing at 63 pounds for a day, but it was overpriced at 63, but still a nice coin but wayyyyy over the odds

Should really expect to pay around £40 for a 1914 in tip top IME, so I'm not sure what happened there, but I guess it only takes two determined people with a bit of spare cash to create a bidding war.

Has copper gone mad ? Certainly a lot of interest in the bronze series in the last few years. I think a lot of that may have to do with sky high prices elsewhere and a (possibly false) perception amongst a large and very healthy number of new entrants, that it still provides value at an accessible price.

Some of the goings on with regard to minor varieties, dots and date widths etc, are unfathomable, to me at least.

With a name like styx collectables, it is entirely appropriate that he likes holes.

Do you realise, if you remove the Oalit faction from the Government, you end up with Coin?

You've got to hand it to him though:-

Unfortunately it has been holed - but even the hole is pretty, being very small and with no ugly scarring. If a coin has to be holed then I would choose this type of hole!

I've heard spin before, but that recommendation of holes in coins, takes it to a whole new level !!!
