George III Sixpence with wavy edges!?..

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know why my George III Sixpence happens to have wavy edges like this? I am befuddled...

That particular issue was something of a one-off. The edge milling is somewhat strange I admit. (I'm not sure what technology they used, but remember, this was only 10 years before the first official 'machined' coin of 1797). Yours looks a little more exaggerated than usual, but it may just be the lighting. I think your coin is perfectly ok.

Thanks, But I thought I managed to google one which seemed to have normal, circular but 'straight' edges earlier. What an intrigiuing design..

The proofs and patterns of this series have plain edges. This also applies to the shillings.
