so much for 1904 halfcrowns - you'd be better off hoarding sixpences

Brilliant exercise Declan! It's late in the evening for me so I will study this at greater leisure. But as you say, the number of 1904 halfcrowns, compared to 1906/08/10, is positively alarming.

When I had a go at collecting a complete run of Edward VII Florins I found that the most difficult date to obtain in good quality was 1909 so that would correspond with this survey.

A really worthwhile exercise Declan. I wonder if it would be possible to pin this somewhere as it looks extremely useful. Perhaps you should try selling it to Spink's!

Declan,

This is really good stuff, Thanks! BTW...I have a uncirculated 1902 LT Half Penny. Got it off of Mark Rassmussen!

Ooh very nice! Here's mine - cost me £2.69 from fiona.freeserve, but at least I've got one. It was a big ugly gap for years.

What hits me in the eye there, is the apparent scarcity of the 1895 penny.

The 1895 seems to be unusual in that the mintage wasn't that great but a much higher proportion than normal are in high grade.

Which they would share with 1911, to a lesser extent with 1937 (especially silver), and even lesser extent with 1953 - all comparatively low mintages set against the average for the reign, but often found in higher grades.

First years of the reign probably benefited from hoarding of the new coinage, so they didn't get spent as quick, and maybe new dies?

Second year of the coinage tend to be more difficult: 1888, 1903, 1912, 1938, 1954
