If someone' daft enough to pay £5 for the commonest crown after Churchill, then good luck to 'em, I say. Those cupro-nickel 1977s are real clunkers, a drag on the market. Even the silver proofs regularly sell for less than £20 - which considering I paid £11 for one in 1979, shows how little they've moved.

They are always described as 50 pence coins!.. The seller clearly thinks you can apply modern values to the old coins - so anyone with a hoard of Cuni Crowns must have suddenly become extremely rich some time in the 90's when they changed the Crown's face-value from 25 pence to a fiver!

Well I decided to look it up, and found it very easily here

I've never heard of the seller, who evidently is in Londonderry, NI. But maybe you should report him to e bay, cartwheel, as he is touting a Crown, face value 25p, as a £5.00 coin. There are some who might fall for that.

Better yet, ask the vendor directly why he is so doing ;)

it is definitely set out to con people into buying the coin, some unsuspecting youngster or overseas purchaser would be easily duped into buying this coin.

Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt. If you look at what he sells, he is not a coin dealer as such. It seems to be mostly toys. There are a few more crowns in his list of items, all of which he descibes as £5.00, as well as a couple of 50p's, accurately described. But the overwhelming bulk of his stock is toys.

It is possible he doesn't know the difference himself, in which case it would be a genuine mistake.

In that case, it's a deliberate con attempt, as you say. Of course, e bay being e bay, are often very slow to react.

I've sent the seller this question:-

Hi,

Why are you describing a Crown (face value 25p) as a £5.00 coin ?

It'll be interesting to see if I get a reply.

It is like gaming tokens...I've seen some go for over £50...I bought a job lot for a fiver (12 tokens).

I've also sent him a "FYI" rather than a question. Usually I get a reply, so it will be interesting to see if that happens this time.

Somewhat predictably, I've received no reply to my question.

Perhaps we should all deluge him with 'points of information'.

Actually it had ended by the time I got round to messaging him, but by none of us doing so we are our own worst enemies. If everybody messaged sellers mis-describing their coins, then its incidence, although unlikely to be totally eliminated, would at least dramatically reduce. Yes there are many instances of it on e-bay, but that doesn't make it right. I know it's a bit heavy for something as minor as this, but to quote Edmund Burke; 'All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing'.

Q.E.D.

And i agree with you Red, although it being Christmas, do wars stop during xmas? No!!!! If you 2 ladies wish to stuff your wives like a Turkey then am sure they'd be pleased with your comment, although they might find the stuffing a little old and dry by the time you next get to stuff your Turkeys after that

yes a war did stop at christmas,

December 25th 1914. german soldiers started to sing "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht" (silent night to you and me). recognizing the tune, english soldiers joined in, presents of tobacco and chocolate and handshakes were exchanged and several games of soccer were enjoyed ( i expect the brits lost on penalties).

Hostilities resumed at 8-30 am on the 26th.

Evidence has been found and observations made that the truce was observed every christmas of ww1.

I believe the war didn't stop as in stop, it did continue for another 4 years ski

He withdrew it, but the other crowns are still for sale, and still described as £5.00 coins (see his other items)
