It may just be me, but I think the shadowing makes it look a bit cheap and tawdry. I don't really know how you could make it appealing without inflating the price somewhat, which is one thing thet Chris is trying not to do. I think simplicity is the key here, perhaps a little more embellished than the current number but along the same lines. Also, I like how Spink totally changes the design - it gives a nice variety.

I agree with Oli about the shadowed lettering. Makes it look a bit superman, if you know what I mean.

I like Aethelreds blue/white attempts and I think Sylvester's needs some attention! This is all good, perhaps I'll pick a few of the best and either use one, or use the basic ideas. Haven't decided yet.

Ah well we differ on that then, i'm always the one that goes for the dull plain books as a rule that look the same, don't like things looking out of place. Your picky over your grammar, i'm picky over having everything properly lined up and in order, uniformity.

I like Aethelred's white-background cover the best for clarity and boldness. I think a different coin, one with real character, each year would help to link the titles and grab prospective buyers. For this purpose you could seek out not just a good example of a coin but an exceptional one, not necessarily UNC, that has high eye-appeal.

I did think of doing it yellow but i thought it might look a bit cheap... (yellow always looks cheap to me).

I just saw my 1993 Seaby catalogue which was just bright orange, nothing more nothing less just orange...

So i thought i'd experiment with orange... i kinda like it, but i like orange so i would.

Feel free to change the brown for black.

Blue sells very well, but a deep blue, like royal blue or a not-too-dark navy. A light blue, pastel or otherwise, is felt as cold and is somewhat offputting. Red, orange, and yellow sell well because of their warmth.

that's what i was thinking, how about blue and orange, just like this forum?

But i was thinking the blue might make it a little too overpowering, it's bright enought with the orangified Florin and the bright orange back grout, i thought a darker colour somewhere might prevent it burning people's eyes out... wouldn't want them sueing now would we?

But i figured that aso Collector's Coins has being using blue for some time now so perhaps a total break? (The 2004's blue and white isn't it? i'm sure the 1992 one was blue too)

Edward: I like to think there are differences between the best way to market things to a UK audience, compared to a US one. Perhaps I'm wrong, perhaps we respond to exactly the same things, but personally I deplore some US style marketing, the kind we see increasingly on cheap cable tv/shopping channels these days.

I don't need a Chi energy machine, nor do a want a ball that rolls around the kitchen floor by itself, cleaning at the same time (yes, we have those dubbed adverts in Germany) and that kind of advert makes me deliberately want to do all I can to not by things advertised that way.

So the books will stay as damned well British as I can keep them...Even if it involves obsessive nit picking

Actually if we come to it, i find lighter blues warmer and darker blues colder...

You have to watch me though i use light blue liberally cos i like the colour... don't get me started on purple... i could have done the whole thing in about 14 shades of purple... (like my bedrooms)

Notice the lack of white, it's not a colour i would use (i avoid it if possible)

Chris, I think you'll find the colors are fairly universal, it's more the graphics and text that are going to make the cover more or less British. I wouldn't do blue and orange on a cover as they are across from each other on the color wheel. Blue and red can be very striking, or green and gold (yum), or blue and gold.

Although as for the TV or other mass marketing , now you've got me thinking. What about a starter kit, say uncirculated of smaller denominations that you can pick up en masse, a few other nVFs, and a CC2005 Geo3/later book? Something like this you could put up as a buy-it-now as well as advertising in elders magazines or something like that. Grandparents in the UK must be thinking of the good old days when a bob was something that you spent (or saved) and have some kind of yen to get their grandchildren acquainted with the history they know. Grandparents are always hard-pressed for gift ideas (I know, I field this question from my mother at least four times a year).

I like blue and gold together... i like dark green with bright light green and a bit of red... can look classy if done right, can look totally naff if not.

I'm a sucker for dark colours though... i like dark greens.

The thing is to catch people's attention on book shelves you need contrasting colours (they usually don't go together, but if they did you wouldn't see the book, it blend in).

Black and light blue go well. So does black and pink. Mind you black goes with anything really... except puce.

To Edward's point about not doing certain colours because they are opposite each otheron the colour wheel, this is wrong. You should use two colours which are opposite as they complement each other, hence the name complementary colours. That's why we have the traditional red and green at Christmas. Have a gander at this if I'm not explaining it well.

I like Sylveter's idea about using black because it is a colour that matches anything. However, what would look really good would be white text (or pink!) on a black background with some pics of silver coins dotted around. But then we hit the price barrier again.

I think so, but it will affect the cost. I'll get some sample stuff done at the printers soon, perhaps the bronze/copper section as a mini book, as that bit is already done. Regardless of the extra cost I would very much like to have a colour image on the cover.
