Mint Error Farthing

Hi, I have aquired an 1844 farthing with a mark on the reverse at 2 o'clock.

Appears to be from a split in die, anyone heard of similar faults? Or value? Coin is in good fine condition.

Die cracks are very common...but 1844 Farthings are not! LOL! They are very scarce!

Welcome to the Forum.

As Azda has already pointed out Die Cracks are fairly common.

May I suggest that you upload a picture.

There are several Forum Members with extensive knowledge of Farthings (Sadly I'm not one of them. lol) Who I'm sure would be able to advise you further.

If you have a scanner, Mike, that does a quicka nd dirty job well enough. Proper coinies scoff at scanning coins, but it would give us a good idea how good your 1844 is.

There was a VF one that didn't get sold "yesterday" for £128(No bids)...it was better than mine but an inbetween grade.

I was tempted but will hang out for something better.In hindsight I could sell mine for £100 and got that one for £128..too late now.

Although the mintage recorded for 1844 1/4d's was 430,000 I would suggest many of these were not actually dated 1844.It is the same with 1869 1d's.

Both these coins are rare and availability does not reflect the mintages.

Yes for mintages on this series you might as well take the number and add or subtract up to 50% just look at 1850!!

Happened quite a lot. The French 10 centimes 1857D has a recorded mintage of 698,830; but no one has ever found one - probably all dated 1856

Gouby estimates in his book that only about 400,000 1869 Pennies were minted with the 1869 date, the balance of the 2.5 million coins were dated 1868! If the 1844 Farthing is the same way, it is a lot scarcer than the 430,080 amount that is quoted in the references. Here is my 1844!

Anything above GF is a good coin....I'm still regreting the VF for £128 but there again it is a date I would happily push the boat out for and get the best....a great investment.
