It's a bit shallow just to say "Ooh it's foreign muck, I'm voting British!" Vote on its eye appeal and aesthetic quality. Look at the swathes of cloth below the crown on the reverse - it has minute patterns on it, one which the scan doesn't pick up well. The ribbons too, they look like they are fluttering in a gentle breeze, the crossed sceptres! Vote French! (And it's not often I say that!)

We're a bit biased in here aren't we.

I voted French (no offence William) because I see Jubilee Crowns every day and just fancied a change. Both are attactive coins, but if I was not French or English and didn't know where either of them were from I think in all honestly I may be inclined to vote the French coin as more attractive! The jubilee bust is not my favourite, although it doesn't look too bad on Crowns.

And Napoleon has a much better beard than Victoria.

I was not implying that "Ooh it's foreign muck", I just dont really like many foreign coins. There are some foreign coins that take my fancy; Ducats or Half Dolars sometimes look lovely, but unfortunately most foreign coins do not take my fancy, and your one was one of them for the following reasons:

  • I do not like the hair that dangles from the back of napoleon's head onto the nape.
  • The fact that it says Empereur on one side, and Empire on the other - too much enphisis towards napoleon.
  • The way that the engraver's name (BARRE) falls into the main coin lettering (Napoleon III Empereur) - I like the engravers name to be directly under the effigy; like English coinage.
  • The mintmark (A), if it is a mintmark, is also not where i like it, it stands out too much.

...sorry that i did not like your coin :(

...i like williams coin because:

  • Victoria's protrait fits in with the edge of the coin.
  • St. George and the Dragon design on the reverse seems to fit perfectly with both sides; not nessessarily in the centre of the coin, but it fits with the size.

... so :)

Umm ok

1) Not hair, it's the ties for the laurels

2) Our coins have "Regina" or "Rex" on them plus they have royal insignia on the reverse, so this is the same as the French one. Our coins have even more focus on the monarch, what with "Dei Gratia F:D" and all that. Plus the word "Empire" refers to the country or the "French empire", not Napoleon.

Well, they're your reasons and I respect them but they seem quite superficial

I only voted for the British coin because I think it has more eye appeal than the French one. Also, I think that British coins overall have the most eye appeal out of all world coins :)

I should like to enter this Double florin:

takenabullet.jpg

It's a pleasing example, at least a VF, with some uneven wear and a slight dig in the obverse!

Slight ding! :D

I'd happily enter that into the Ugly Coin Comp!

Most of the bullet is still inside, I expect someone shot it just for fun, but wouldn't you be pleased if that was in the right place, in your breast pocket at the right time!

Is there not a competition for 'Coins that saved lives'?
