Is ''Paul Wincott@@ still dealing?

Recommended Posts

I had the pleasure to meet a coin dealer called ''Paul Wincott'' some years ago and wondered if he's still on the coin scene?

He used to deal in 'high grade' silver coins from what i remember and saw him at a London Coin fair.

Does anyone know what he's doing nowadays please?

While we are asking questions about former dealers...I have one I use to deal with, years ago (60's), Carole Towler, Does anyone remember or know of her? I think she was from Brighton.

Paul was still active 10 years ago or so, and I did some business with him. Last time I met him was at Warwick - he'd just bought 3 BU 1921 shillings (the rare pre-1920 obverse) for £60 apiece. I wish I'd offered to buy one! but I seem to remember he'd got buyers for all three. Don't know where he is now.

Wow I remember her adverts from late 60s Coin Monthly. As a schoolkid I seem to remember she looked 'hot', but then anything in a dress looks 'hot' when you're 17

Peck,

Carole Towler also advertised in "Coin World" here in the USA, and that is how I made contact with her. Everything was done by mail back then, and I spent a lot of time ordering, offering bids, etc. for English coins from her. She seemed to drop out of sight in the late 60's, and I never knew if she retired, quit the business, moved, or what. I still have some of the coins I purchased from her. She was great to deal with.

As for appreciating someone who is "hot"...I still remember how that goes...some things you never forget! LOL!

In the mid 1980s I used to go into a coin shop in Reading most Saturdays; unfold my little list of what I needed and spend what was, to me at 18/19 years old, significant amounts. I was a scruffy little chap in a leather jacket in them days. Got my first 1926ME penny there. If anyone knows Reading it was the one on Castle Street, not the one on the Oxford Road.

According to Google street view, it's still there! The Berkshire Stamp, Coin, Model and Card centre. Anyone know it?

Who knows, whoever it is might even be on this forum, and I'm sure they'll be a familiar ebay name.

I did my first dealings from coin monthly...it used to arrive and the call made that day...it wasn't till I had a bit of surplus that I treated the family out to Harrowgate or Coventry that I bought quality....I remember spending a couple of grand at the Midland and the wife still doesn't know...It is still worth more than I paid...plus I have enjoyed them.Might have to sell soon as both daughters want Uni and cars.I sometimes wish I remained single and if it F##ks floats or flys rent it.

Ah you young 'uns! Nothing to beat finding your first 26ME in your change :) especially if you have the damn thing a whole year before you realise it's the ME not the common one. :D

By the mid 60's virtually all the KNs had been lifted from circulation, worn specimens are probably now commoner than the RM strikings.

I only ever found one 1926ME and one 1897 High Tide in circulation. The latter much rare than the 2mm, but catalogues less in Spink - odd, expect it's the demand thing for a better known, easier to spot variety

Horrid! Been artificially lustred at some point to 'enhance' its grade.

I don't know if Paul(The wink)is still dealing, but he appeared at the auction of the Laurie Bamford collection of bronze pennies in 2006. Paul had lost a bit of hair, I spoke to him but didn't recognise him! a bit embarrasing! I believe he works for London Transport, underground train driver.

As far as I am aware he is still dealing... though shall ask him when I see him at Reading Coin Club's auction in a couple of weeks! He's been a member with us for years!

Oh, and as an aside, as Club Secretary it would be remiss of me to miss this opportunity... please see our shiny new website at www.readingcoinclub.co.uk!

Cheers!

hmm... the link option didnt work... here goes again!

Then we have probably met. I don't go as often as I would like as, despite being the nearest coin club to me, it is still an hour's drive away and finding my way and parking in Reading is an absolute nightmare. Still, it's a very good club and I've always been impressed with the activities and talks provided for the members.

Just one thing, can't you move the meeting a bit closer to me?

Ahh! Well, if you come along in the future, I'm not difficult to miss being the only one with my 30th birthday still a few years in front of me!

I think parking anyway is difficult these days, however I may have a solution for you (PM sent!)

With regard to moving the meeting closer to you... if you're an hour away, it wouldn't really be the Reading Coin Club any more would it... and the 'An-Hour-Outside-of-Reading Coin Club' doesn't really roll off the tongue :P

Can you add me to your numismatic links page, Mr Reading Coin club? Perhaps a direct link to the forum and one to the main site?
