The prices at London Coins seems very high to me as they are now...so what's with the price increase....I guess the recession is over in Great Britain! BTW...the recession is still on over here! LOL!

I got their catalogues for a while and failed on my bids...their slabbed coins are priced way OTT.

Another one to avoid.

I really can't understand the apparent increase at all. London coins are massively overpriced IMO.

They price themselves out of the game with their grading...absolute farce...I was thinking of getting a couple of raw coins slabbed but will ignore...both are BU and a blind man could grade them.I might have mentioned before a farthing sold at their auction for £90 was slabbed by them(dodgy) and was priced up at £150 It had edge damage which was covered by the slab....another dodgy dealer...be aware but there are good dealers out there.

It sounds like the general consensus is they (London Coins) are overpriced before the planned increase!<gggg>.

Know your good dealers and stick with them...I once ordered a coin from Colin Cooke and he phoned me to say it wasn't for me...top bloke sadly missed.Everyone likes a good deal but there are a few on the bay.

I'm going through a clear out and ID'ing coins...I did hear of a dealer picking up a collection of Liz 1 coins worth about £10K for £50...a disgrace.

My coins are uninsured but I have a Springer and feral cat to ward off nasty types.My pal collects Geo 11 furniture and doesn't bat an eyelid at coffee cups on the table....they are to be used but not abused.My terror is my 13 year old daughter feeding my 1/2ds into the 2p machines at the slot machines....however my eldest is a bit smarter as she does my pictures and loads the stuff on ebay in seconds.....however she believes Ebay money is hers.Luckily the wife hasn't seen me sneek a few £ out of my account...I have promised a round the world cruise in 10 years time. ...I would prefer 2 weeks on a Greek Island holding the tummy in with Raki,squid Mataxa 3 4 or 5 and coke...4 of us used to get bladdered on less than £10.

That's good advice. I just happen to be on London Coins mailing list, since I registered for one of their auctions, a couple of years ago. I don't think I have ever bought anything off of them.

My favorite English Dealer is Michael Gouby. I have purchased his books, as well as a few coins from him..in fact one time he thought he had overcharged me for postage, and sent me $20.00 back with my coin shipment!

Your mention of a Greek Island sounds interesting, however my next trip will be to visit London this summer. A visit to Michael's shop, The Portabello Market, and Jane Austens home are on the list for sure, as well as the Tower, and the other usual tourist traps! LOL!

I have a lot of US connections my aunt married one of your guys and I also worked on the US base at Lakenheath for 2 years..don't bother with London the rest of the UK is so much nicer...The Midland coin fair at the NEC in Birmingham is great...use laterooms to pick up the bargains...we often stay at the Ansty Hotel or in Coventry village hotel for our family trips....when you get to the NEC the wallet shakes....be there for 10am...take a good glass and lighting because it isn't always good....the bigger fairs are 4 times per year the next one is in March.

If you're in London, you MUST go to the Bank of England Museum and then jump onto the central line (subway) and visit the British Museum's coin gallery sponsored by RBS, then a visit to Spink (around the corner) and finish yourself off at Baldwins in the Strand.

II was going to say the same thing, not only because of the fair which is way too far north for me, but York itself is worth a couple of days of your time.

There are so many interesting places to see...we still discover new attractions....I haven't been to London for a couple of years...and don't miss it.

The internet is a great help in planning your trip...we all have our preferences...just extend your stay and don't buy all the coins.

i bid £50 for a vickie florin in one of their auctions, it was won by them for £55!!! and its now slabbed (quoting the auction/lot number) and for sale on their website for £350

his coins are fairly priced and his grading is good. ive always been pleased with my purchases.

That's great information, thanks! The only places I have definatly set on currently are London, Bath/Chawton, but I am sure I will be adding others.

My biggest problem, is I don't get to spend all my time chasing coins down. My wife thinks coins are only made to spend, and I will require some care in adjusting "her" schedule to match mine. I am sure my fellow numismatists don't have that problem! LOL!

The idea of visiting Baldwin's is a good one. I met Stephen Hill, at last years New York International Coin Fair, and purchased a really nice (EF) 1843, with colon, penny from him. I'll probably make that visit for sure.

Are there any coin dealers in the Portabello Road Market (Near Notting Hill)? I am going to take my wife there, and that would be great, if a couple of dealers were there also! LOL!

Michael Gouby is very close to there, close enough for you to pay him a visit while your wife does the market.

Portobello Road is where I cut my collecting teeth buying odds nad ends from a dealer called Ken King - I often wonder what happened to him. The place used to be a real den of thieves and vagabonds but the entire area has gone stratospheric since those days, sanitised and just not so much fun any more. Personally I don't actually know if there are any dealers in the market itself, but somehow I doubt it.

I never had that experience with Colin. What I will say is that if I had ANY problem with any of his coins, he'd refund me, no questions asked. As you say - sadly missed.

I bought a BU 1931 shilling from Richard a couple of years back, at an absolute bargain price. Very pleasant and considerate guy to deal with.
