Unidentified George IV coin

Hello there,

I am trying to find some information on a coin but am having little luck. Any help would be appreciated please.

The coin says 'IN MEMORY OF GEORGE THE FOURTH' on one side with his picture in the middle

The other side says 'BORN AUG12 1752 CROWNED JULY 19 1821' then in the middle there is a picture with 'OBIT june 26 1830'

Does any one have any ideas/information about this coin at all? I can't seem to get a good picture of it (my camera is a bit basic)

Hi Katelyn,

Welcome to the Forum.

From your description it sounds as if it may not be a coin at all, but rather a Commemorative Memorial Medal for George IV.

I have no knowledge of medals, commemorative or otherwise, so I may very well be wrong. lol However I am sure that another Forum Member will be able to assist you further.

A picture would really be very helpful in this case, so if at all possible try to upload one if you can.

Yes, indeed. That's an In Memoriam medallion for Geo IV, I'm not an expert in these, and don't know how rare those particular issues are. I'm guessing not rare, as the 19th Century was a high-water mark for commemorative medallions. What sort of size is it? (Yes, a picture would be useful).

I'm amazed anybody bothered to mark his death with anything other than rejoicing (perhaps tempered by the fact that he was only to be replaced by his brother). The Times obituary contained the following passage; "There never was an individual less regretted by his fellow-creatures than this deceased king. What eye has wept for him? What heart has heaved one throb of unmercenary sorrow? ... If he ever had a friend — a devoted friend in any rank of life — we protest that the name of him or her never reached us."

So, a little bit of erudition to mark my 1,000th post.

I think that I may have found the item in question. I'm not sure if it is the same one but the inscriptions seem to fit.

British Historical Medals 1760-1960 Volume I #1396 - Death of George IV.

Hopefully another Forum Member may be able to shed more light on it if it is the correct one.

Thank you so much for your responses! I was just trying to upload a picture when I noticed that someone has found a picture and put it up! That is exactly what I have been describing (well, mine is is poorer condition). But definitely the same! Thank you, I wouldlove to know how you found it, I have spend hours looking for anything like it. I have a lot more coins that I have no idea about and it looks like this site will be of great help! Thank you again! I assume it might not be of any great value?!

I did a Google search for 'In Memory of George The Fourth Medal' and I saw a website named 'NapoleonicMedals.' I had a little look under 1830 and there it was. It was just guesswork but knowing the Inscription helped to identify it.

As for value, I have no idea in the slightest. Sorry.

I sold one of those on ebay a few years back. Cant quite remember what it fetched but it was not a great amount. Have a look on ebay, try under Royal memorabilia.
