what sort of coins could you buy that are rare if you on a small budget

You have asked a lot of questions, recieved many answers, and responded to none.

Why ?

Unfortunatly rare coin and small budget don't appear side by side in the same sentence.

Yes they do, you just said it!

Sure. But perhaps slow down a bit with the quickfire rat tat tat of questions? Tell us a bit about yourself - what have you started collecting, what types and series of coins float your boat, what are you specifically looking for? Etc.

Good - that's a nice mixed group of items. It's best to see what interests you, and buy widely when you're starting out, then decide later what you want to 'major' on.

But remember - condition is the most important thing : it's more important than rarity. A worn rare coin might be worth only £2 - £3. Whereas a run-of-the-mill Victorian shilling might be worth scrap only if worn, but around £200 in top grade (just as an example).

You could do a lot worse than buy just two books to start you off : Collectors Coins GB (the 2011 edition will be out in a month or two), and The Grading Guide to British Coins. Both can be bought through this forum and will teach you a lot about coins, varieties, and condition.

Righto Freddy - forget what they are worth for a start. Coin collecting is never, ever going to make you rich.

At the stage you're at, I wouldn't even recommend you get a book yet, just buy whatever looks nice to you (think shiny, but not polished), and don't spend more than a fiver on any one coin.

Do that for a few months, and you'll have a collection. By then you'll have a better idea of what you like, and what you find a bit tedious. This is a hobby, it's supposed to be fun, so drop the boring bits and collect more of the nioe stuff.

Then buy a book.

The book (and by then you'll know which book you want) will start you on the next level...

Sounds like you might enjoy some of either Baldwins or London Coins past sale catalogues - they tend to have a bit of everything in and can be picked up relatively inexpensively if you pay attention.

Quite enjoyable flicking through them and they also give you an idea of values as well, although they are obviously only estimates.

Don't just look at the value. The history bit is far nicer...when you can afford a Queen Anne farthing or a 1717 farthing you have arrived....hang on I'm here :P

i knw this site for coins but i wondering whats the value of Gibraltar £1 note from 1988

97p at today's rate. As Peckris says, you're not going to endear yourself to folk here by constantly asking for values of completely random coins and currencies in such a scatter-gun manner. It's beginning to sound like trolling which, if it's not, I'm sure you would wish to avoid.

If you have the note issued on 04/08/1988 then it's face value, it's still a pound, unless it's uncirculated, which means crisp as a sergeant majors underwear, then it could go £15.

Check out whether it's still legal tender, I could do it for you, but....

This series ended on that date and was replaced by the nugget that we all have in our pockets today, well, they have a different series of nugget...

I'm currently thinking that our inquisitor is young Acc, I jumped down his throat and now feel bad, let us give him the chance to introduce himself.

Welcome Freddy!

Coin collecting is a great hobby, and I can't think of a better way to spend a couple of hours while the nipper is asleep.

It's also very cool to be thinking ahead about passing the collection down the generations - most of us are here becuase someone did that long ago.

Value is a vaguely useful measure of desirability, but that's it, really. The desirability of a coin is so subjective. Imagine you had all the predecimal Elizabeth II halfpennies except the 1962. To you, getting the 1962 to plug the final gap in the set would be more important than it's value might suggest, so you'd pay more than most people would. On paper, the coin is more or less worthless, but every coin is worth something to someone for that reason.

I strongly advise you familarise yourself with eBay. Learn what's out there, watch things, particularly items you have in your own collection, and spend a little - a few quid here, a few quid there. Most of the coinies on here are seriously advanced collectors, but don't let that put you off, they all started where you are now.

Yes, the thrill of the treasure hunt is a nice part of the hobby, but if we were all honest, it's the thrill of completing sets and series that really floats our boats.

I've been collecting since I was 15, so 4 years now  Seriously though, a looooong time! And you're right about trial and error when you begin - which is why it's important as a newbie to buy cheap, that way if you make mistakes it won't hurt too bad.

One suggestion is to try collecting by TYPE. This means getting one of each main type, rather than one of every date. So, for example, pre-decimal Elizabeth II you'd want :-

• Crowns 1953, 1960, 1965 (each is a different type, and not expensive)

• one each of Halfcrown, Florin, English shilling, Scottish shilling, sixpence, threepence, penny, halfpenny, farthing. You want the highest grade you can get - uncirculated coins from the 60s are usually much cheaper than the 50s (except farthings which only go up to 1956).

If you get the two books I mentioned before, they will teach you a lot and help you get started :)

thanks for the help how much do the books cost ? and ave u got the link for it

If you scroll to the top of this page, there's a picture of the titles - clicking them takes you to Amazon. I don't see any copies of CCGB there right now, but Chris Perkins (whose forum this is) might stop by and sell you one; they are about £6 I think. The Grading book is available on Amazon and on offer at £8.44 right now. I've got both and they are good value, especially for beginners.

Best thing to do with these Freddy is see what examples in various grades are going for on ebay - then you can compare with what you have

The lower of those two estimates is about right freddyy - probably around £60 a pop.

And decreasing...

Seriously, this is the sort of over-hyped coin you want to avoid, at least for some years by which time the only people interested in them will be us collectors.
